Having only spent $300 total on the gun, I'm not complaining. It's not an expensive finish job but I think it looks a heck of a lot better than it did. With the pitting on the gun before I had it finished, the collectors value had been shot to pieces anyway. Bluing it certainly didn't hurt the value.

I'm not sure if it'd work as a touch up method or not, but maybe fume bluing could work? It's sort of like rust bluing but you use a box where you create an acidic atmosphere, it should theoretically not react with extant bluing and only include oxidation in bare metal. Then boil & card & repeat until the whole gun is blue again.

This is just an idea I got, I have no idea if it will work or match the color of the rest of the gun if one tries to do it. Maybe an experiment for a non valuable gun though...

e: Oh I see its refinished already.

I agree-though I think the fellow who did the refinishing job could have spent a little more time and effort to completely eliminate the still visible pitting marks. One thing to keep in mind in terms of not adversely affecting the resale value is to have the factory do the refinishing. A verifiable factory refinish will not hurt the collector appraisal nearly as much as any other after-market redo will.

Hey bringing this one back. Just curious...what sales value would you put on this particular pistol given it's condition and refinish?

I would say it's worth about what you have in it......maybe a touch more. It is just late enough production (17-3's are common) + with the refinish, it's value is as a shooter. The up side of it is that you can shoot and carry it all you want and it will never go down in value.

PS, I have a 1933 vintage Colt New Service that has had exactly the same type of refinish done to it. When you examine it closely, you can see a fair amount of small pitting on the left side. While I wish it hadn't been done, I don't know how badly the original finish was deteriorated.

Late to this one. Looks like they just beat blasted it and dunked it in the tank.
A S&W factory refinish would likely have brought it back properly.
Correctly polishing a revolver is an art.

I have an old 5 screw K22 that was a real beater. Had the same exact finish put on it ala Model 28. Matte blue. Very happy and a shooter.
