I just bought a Savage 10fp-Le2 in .308 and I shot it today. First, i put through it 10 shots just to break it in... or so i thought. Afterwards, I started doing 3 shot groups with Federal Gold medal match bthp, but my best group was about 1.25" at 100 yards. Ive seen this rifle do 1/4" with the same ammo. Is mine just not broken in yet. For my scope, i have a bushnell elite 4200 6-24x40. I have the same scope on my .223 remington 700 and that gun groups 1/4" 4 shot groups. So im wondering whats the problem with mine. I also have leupold rings and mounts. I was thinking that maybe its not broken in enough, because when i started wiht my .223, the groups didnt shrink to 1/4" till after about 80 rounds through the gun, now theyre consistently at 1/4"-1/2". Does anyone know what the deal is?

There is the possibility that it was caused when the bbl heated up. The hotter it gets, the more it "warps". Usually this warping is not permanent, but the Savage has a standard thickness bbl and does not dissapate the heat as readily. I have the same problem with my Savage 11FXP3 in .300WSM.

Just my .02.

there's a lot that goes into making a rifle shoot well...
your technique maybe doesn't agree w/ the rifle, your rate of fire, the ammo could be the problem, bedding problems, barrel channel, etc.

try a different ammo, and try waiting 60 seconds between shots. leave the bolt open and no round in the chamber so that the round in the chamber isn't sitting in there cooking between shots.

also, .25" groups consistently thru a factory gun are extraordinarily rare. it has been my experience that despite the wild claims on the net, savages are good for .75" - 1.25" consistently... and if you are stuck using factory loads, you're gonna have a helluva time making .25" consistently. i'm not saying that it won't do it once in awhile, but i am saying that to do it consistently (every group) is about impossible. basically, cut your rifle a break... a factory rifle that shoots factory loads into about an inch ain't all bad...
