Went to the local gun show in here in my area last weekend , typical show nothing special high ammo prices lots of evil black guns and plastic pistols, small crowd this time, anyway sitting at a table near the food stand this older gentleman walks by with three pistol cases, I ask what you got in there, Model 28, model 629 , SP101, gives the price I say nice, I thought the prices were kinda high. So spent another 2 hours looking around did not buy anything, decided to leave , went outside sat down in the cool fall day , got up to go to my car, here comes that gentleman with just two of the guns he had before, I say did you sell that 629, he goes nope left back in the truck, I say that's too bad nice gun, I say I will give you 7 bills for it, he say no thanks, we walk away in different directions then he yells back , hey would do a little more, I say no , hey says okay, we walk to the truck and now I have a beautiful 629-1, excited to try it out.

That's a nice hand cannon,,,

I always smile when I see a nice 629,,,
Mine was a gift or I would never have gotten one.

When the father of my best friend passed away,,,
He had a personal collection of over 90 rifles and pistols.

I helped her identify, evaluate, and clean them all in one weekend,,,
She said the 629 was her father's favorite gun,,,
She hated shooting it so she gave it to me.

I have no practical need for a gun like it,,,
But man is it fun to touch off a cylinder or two at the range.

It was invaluable when I was trying to decide which Wonder-9 to buy,,,
Whenever I saw someone with a 9mm I hadn't tried,,,
I offered to let them shoot "Jezebel" in trade,,,
Very few people ever turned me down,,,
I got to try many 9-mils that way. :)

Congrats on a nice find my friend,,,
You're gonna have lots of fun.

Beautiful 629, congrats on the nice acquisition! ... and thanks for the pics. :)

$700 ... I must confess that that surprised me a bit.

I have a round butt 3" 629-1 that I bought, new, in the late '80s for $399, IIRC. I guess that I have not recently thought about what such firearms in my collection are currently worth. Good to have some idea, though. ;)

629-1? Ah, like mine!

All you need now is to give it some personality and a good holster.

I added the Tyler-T grips now a month ago. And tomorrow it goes to the woods with me to hunt DEER!

Yep, that six shooter with DPX 225 gr ammo is my deer gun this year.

My Winchester 70 270 WSM and Ruger 77 Compact .308 will just have to sit it out.

Where did you get that holster?

It looks like one from Pacific Canvas and Leather,,,
But yours looks to be lined with pigskin.

It's an El Paso 1942 holster. I was at a gun show and this guy had one for sale. It's lined. He wanted $90 and I notice it said 'N4' on the back. That is N frame 4 inch.

So 90 dollars flat and I got it.

The grips I have no idea who made but they wanted $250. Over the years I went back and they still had them at the shop. I offered $125. Got them. And of course the Tyler T (they are back in production in Oklahoma.)

I have a couple of other N frame .44s (mountain guns) but I prefer the heavier barrel and more sturdy front sight of the original 629.

Light enough for me to pack and still be powerful enough for just about any critter I could face here in Texas (except maybe an escaped elephant from the zoo.)

And Snake, let us know how it shoots!!!! You can never have to many N frame revolvers, especially classics.

Snake, I hope you feel ashamed for taking advantage of that poor, old man.

BTW, Smith and Wessons are garbage.

Sell it to me, and I'll dispose of it properly-240 grains at a time. :)

Yeah, I'm yanking yer chain.
Nice score. Very nice.
I must have an N frame, for nor other reason than the fact that I don't have one.
I sure would love to have a 27 or 28, though a 38/44 Outdoorsman, a 24, and a 25 really speak to me.

Looks like a 629-1 to me; not sure about the light-blue cast to the frame; but I'm guessing background light; either blue sky or a fluorescent light. I'd bet it looks like a well-polished stainless model in pure daylight. Sure a lot prettier than mine. But mine cost less than half what Snake paid for his, at a pawn shop in Mesa, AZ in 1993.

If the grips on mine looked that good, even the right panel; they'd have a layer or two of varnish sanded off and still be living on the frame; not in a box on a shelf in a very dark closet. Ah, well, the Goncalo Alves Monogrip gives my long, skinny fingers a better grip on the old girl.

Nice gun. Too bad it's not the desirable P&R model. The 629-1 has the cost cutting non-pinned barrel and non-recessed cylinder without the strengthened frame of later model 629s. Be careful shooting full house 44 magnum loads through it.

CoThG, It will be fine, no matter what I shoot in it, I am glad to have it.
Your gun doesn't have the endurance package of the later model 29s and 629s. Yours can can unlock with full power loads.

Good to know, thanks!

I will keep it in mind whenever I take my 629-1 out for some exercise.

So far I have probably run close to 1000 rounds of full power loads thru it.

I have experienced no issues (except, early-on having to loctite a screw that kept shooting loose & the OEM wooden grips kept bloodying my thumb knuckle) but that does not mean that nothing will happen in future.

Nice gun. Too bad it's not the desirable P&R model...blah blah blah

Wow, what a buzzkill. It's poor form to talk crap in a NGD thread. Sometimes "opinions" are best left to oneself

Very nice gun. But think about it. Stories like this are why the anti-gunners want to outlaw gun shows. Why stir up the pot just to brag about a great deal that gives the anti-gunners more ammunition to use against us?:(
Next time show your gun and be quiet about the rest.

I have no idea what is wrong with him relating his story... Bizarre.

On a constructive note, I like Deaf Smith's choice in leather (and his former county sherrif ;) ). Highly recommend a El Paso Tanker; I have one for a 1911 and this one for my 629 and 27. Need one for a 4 and 5" N frame, too. They aren't cheap, but the ARE worth the money.

Oro, Beautiful gun and rig you got there, very nice. That rig looks like the one I saw Hickok45 was using in one of his you tube videos about the Smith and Wesson 629 4" 44 mag.
