My recent encounter with a gun "expert"

While I have not yet attained the honored title of ninjutsu warrior, I am a trained shopping area defense agent that is an experienced tactical operator.

I always hear "shot placement" being cried out everytime someone justifies an "under dog" caliber. So why is it that the police don't use bb guns and just try a little harder to shoot the BG's in the eyes?

I heard the same thing from some clown at the Cabela's here (or a few miles down the road, anyway). That and the tired, absurd "The 9mm round is designed to wound" thing. Jeez. Nothing gets on my nerves more than going to a gun store and feeling like you're being talked out of spending money on something that you've decided you want to buy. There's a couple of good stores here in town, so I rarely find occasion to subject myself to the bludgeoning experience that is shopping at Cabela's.

Because they all use .45 ACP. Oh wait no they don't...

I read all these stories and I'd have to say that most of them involve idiot sales people with no sales training.

A good salesman asks you what YOU need, want, and then makes SUGGESTIONS for something else if necessary, all to do one thing, find out what works for you.
Its not about what he wants, or what he loves, its about the customer.

I work sales, and I deal with hundreds of customers a day, sure I sell a printer and not a gun, but its the same philosophy.

Guy comes in wanting a new printer for photos, doesn't want to pay alot for ink. I take that into consideration and show him some models that are a good price on ink, use individual cartridges and a brand that has had very few returns. If he doesn't want individual cartridges, I show him another model with tri-color inks. I may not agree that a tri-color cartridge saves money, but I'll find him one thats inexpensive because thats what he wants.
Of course I will tell him why I like the individual ink system for his needs, but don't push it, he's the one who's going to weigh the pro's and con's, not you. Your there to influence him that the purchase he is going to make is the one that he's going to be happy with and not return.

Same exact principal can be applied to selling firearms. So what you don't think 9mm is all that great, he wants it, you can tell him the facts but if he wants a 9mm, GIVE HIM A 9MM!

lol

Point being, these guys are obviously guys that they hire off the street that have product knowledge. I hire guys who have sales experience, everyone can learn product knowledge down the road, but you want someone who knows how to sell, make your store money, than one who thinks he knows everything but doesn't sell anything.

The advice was worth what you paid for it .. As is the advice you get from internet forums .. :neener:

The Germans killed plenty with the 9mm in WWII.

(This is the part where someone pipes up with... "Yeah, but the Germans LOST! What did the guys who beat them use?! .45 acp, that's what!")

Actually to be more correct, they used 7.62x25.

Gun experts. Bah. If you need to steer someone away from what they want without properly informing them, odds are you aren't one yourself.

Many calibers including 9mm are plenty for a clean shot on a BG. The reason for the switch to 10mm / .40cal and another reason 45's are "better" is the automobile. Law enforcement needs to shoot BG's that are inside of Automobiles while CCW folks probably don't need to take those shots...some butter knives are better.

As an expert I have fired dozens of rounds of 9mm over the years and can tell you that it will not hurt a fly. In fact we used to shoot it at each other when we ran out of paintballs. No one ever got hurt. Now the .40 S&W is a real bullet. One clip of those for your Glock and you are good to go. Every night around the house I just rack the slide on mine and it scares away the people trying to break in and steal my zip cuffs.

Disclaimer: Attempting to use a 9mm handgun in lieu of a paintball gun may result in serious injury.

Man, it's not clerk power, it's clerk placement. Clerk ignorance is a whole 'nother issue, which you overcome via the velocity gained from a longer counter.

Good to know I don't need to head up to the new Cabella's unless I need some camo whatever.

[sarcasm] Haha .. I got me a glock 40 with a full clip!! 9mm is for suckas!! [/sarcasm]

I bought my first gun from a Cabelas. A S&W .357 magnum revolver. As I was filling out forms, this young clerk went to grab some ammo for me to buy. I didn't know much about ammo brands, etc. But I told him to grab a box of .38 special as well as a box of .357 magnum.

I didn't notice until I actually loaded and started firing the gun at the local range that he had sold me .38 SUPER, not .38 special. Ay-yi-yi! I never see that clerk at Cabelas anymore. (And I pay a lot more attention to how my ammo is labeled!)

Just goes to show you though: it's not always safe to trust your safety to others. Do your own research. Whether it's, "this is the ammo you need," "this is the gun you need," or "of course it's unloaded," you should always verify it for yourself.

I was at Cabelas in Boise. I wanted to purchase a box of .470 Nitro for my what else .470 Nitro. Ammo new runs $300 a box. Yes thats $15 dollars a piece every time I pull The trigger, (I did have Cabelas points to help out)

The salesmen handed me a box, and I asked him the price, he actually seemed to turn a little pale when he told me the price.

THEN HE HAS TO ASK THE STUPID QUESTION.

"What are you going to kill with that?"

My Response:

"Anything I want"

P.S.

Did the guy volunteer to get shot by a 9mm???

Since they don't kill you and probably don't hurt at all people are probably lining up right now to be shot.

I just love salesmen behind gun counters.

Are you trying to say shot placement doesn't matter with the "top dog" calibers?

Shot placement matters for basically everything under 40mm grenades. Contrary to rumor, you can get hit with multiple .45 shots and still be fighting, it just depends on where you're hit. So that being said, if something deserves to be shot once, it deserves to be shot two or three times. I'd rather have 15 rounds to do that than 7. If I carried a .45 I would still fire at least twice. But then I would only have 5 rounds left instead of 13.

Anyone who carries a big caliber like .45 just because they think it will definitely stop a BG with one shot is a fool.

I have also seen demonstrations of a guy standing on one foot and taking double taps from a FAL to demonstrate how effective bulletproof his vests are. He was not lifted off his feet. He just stood there.
Sounds like a man that wanted to demonstrate he knew what he was talking about and was dumb as can be at the same time :D

I like to ask loaded questions in gunshops. (seriously, no pun intended)

IE: Can this 45-70 shoot 454 and 45 colt ammo.

Keep'em talking it's fun,
I had a sales clerk at Sportsman's Warehouse talk me out of some night sights. He told me all about the time the local cops came to his gun club's shoot house to do a night shoot against the gunclubbers using simunitions. Apparently the gun clubbers won because they didn’t have night sights on their guns. They could see the cops coming by watching the glow of their night sights.

Gotta love these Thinkers.
Food for thought...A friend of mine (Paramedic)had a patient today that shot himself point blank in the head with a pistol...hes gonna live but will lose an eye and some brain fxn. The pt was in middle school....the gun was a 45.

I suppose the gun didnt know he was a kid, or the kid didnt know it was a 45.
