My recent encounter with a gun "expert"

Don't condemn Cabellas or any gunshop

for the stupid opinions of their employees. They all have them, employees with opinions that is. Their opinions are stupid if they don't conform to yours, and shear brilliance if they do.:neener: Say what you will about Cabellas and any other large retailer but remember they are probably the only place that you can reasonably expect to walk into and find 6 different style holsters for your Glock, XD or S&W M&P and 12 different styles for your 1911. Small shops can't afford that kind of overhead and yes, you will pay a little more for the convenience. The last time I was in a Cabellas, I was on the way to a big Cowboy action event at the time, I noticed that I could have have bought not only brass and bullets for 32 H&R Mag, 38-40, and 45 Colt but, loaded ammo as well. I took note of these because that is what we were shooting. Was some of the stuff pricey, sure, but at least it was available! We have a Cabelas coming to our area in the next year or so and I for one can't wait. If their prices are high then it won't hurt the small gunshops. They will have more of a selection and more accessories than most of the shops around because of their size. The fact that they are coming to town has prompted LL Bean to reemphasize their commitment to hunters and fisherman by building a new store. They too are overpriced but, it is nice to see that they are not only concerned with selling clothing.

As for the caliber war that is going on here now as it has forever, enough already.:D Everybody has their opinion as to which is the best and some even back them up with logic. For me, I look at it this way.

1) Shot placement DOES MATTER, regardless of the caliber you choose. A 9mm in the heart lung area is more efective than a 45 in the shoulder.

2) Caliber: Bigger is probably better when it comes to caliber and is always better when it comes to round capacity. What this means to me is that I prefer the 357 Sig and the 40 S&W over the 9mm. The 357 Sig is the same size bullet as the 9mm but packs a lot more punch. My Glock 23s and and my 32 both hold 14 rounds with one in the chamber in a relatively compact package. The Glock 19 in 9mm is the exact same size and holds two more rounds. I will sacrifice the 2 extra rounds for the more powerful cartridge. By the way, I would not feel undergunned carrying a 9mm because I do feel confident in my ability to accomplish rule 1. My Glock 21 in 45 ACP holds the same number of rounds as my 23/32 but is tad on the large side for comfortable carry. I do not feel that I am losing much if anything by carrying the 40 instead of the 45.

Sounds like an "armchair gun expert" (defined as one who NEVER shoots; and
relies heavily on knowledge gained from reading gun rags) too me~! :)

He probably does not even know that shot placement is paramount, in any given
handgun caliber.

In our shop, we don't employ these types of "experts"~! ;) :D

Well stated

I had a similar experience at our local hardware store a couple of weeks ago. The great thing is I live in a town that the hardware store has guns, but that day the emplyee felt compeled to draw his "super blaster XD 40" and show it to me. I normally would not mind this but I did not enjoy being infront of him as the muzzle began to rise.
You stated your experience much better than I did. One would assume that the manager of the gun shop in -insert shop here- would establish a informational training program the employees to better assist customers.

I've never experienced that at our Cabela's in Wheeling. I've talked to some very thoughtful, experienced handgun salesmen there. They've sold me three XDs and a Smith revolver. I've particularly been happy with their Cabela's Club $100-off deals.

What irritates me more is when I'm in a gun store and the sales person is waving a pistol in my face.

Last week I ducked a bit when this idiot was waving a pistol back and forth while telling me something. He noticed me duck and said "Don't worry, it's not loaded."

This seems to be really common in gun stores - a sense of immunity.

I've taken a new tact with BS'ers and mall ninjas. I lay down the BS so thick you can smell it 50 miles away...and see if they flinch!
My homie and I were in Gander Mtn the other day. We were there for fishing stuff, but wandered into the firearms for grins. We were browsing the AR15's and M4gery's, and inspecting one that had 4 rails on the handgaurd :what:. Guy sidles up next to us and begins proclaiming it amazing because you can hang more stuff on it than a swiss army knife. I added "Of course, and the M16 is so amazing since the bullets tumble in flight and cause more damage...." He got all excited. Mike giggled and we wandered off.

"Sir, when people point a gun at me, I tend to shoot back. You may want to reconsider doing that again."

Cabela's has a sign at the front doors to check your guns......and if you want to bring someting inside 'they' will carry it for you to the sales counter & escort you out with it when you leave. go figure

Claude, my belief is that applies only to a gun you are bringing in to sell, trade or get worked on - not concealed carry.

I had a "Ex-CIA" agent tell me that he watched a man get shot with 10 rounds of 9mm and he kept fighting (And lived) but anytime he has seen someone shot with a .45 they dropped in one shot..
I'm ex-CIA too (and I have the ball cap to prove it!) and I say he's lying. We never watched gun fights, we were always in gun fights and we used 9mm's. I've killed more BG's before lunch than any Army Delta Force / SEALs / Rangers / MEU Marines (all combined mine you) have killed in a month.

Hehe.

I hate people who claim to be something they're not... but they're fun to laugh at. I wish I had a dollar for every SEAL, Ranger, Scout Sniper, Delta Force member I've met over the years in bars and online. Oh, I forgot CIA members. :D

I know what you mean. My local store is very good about clearing weapons before they hand them to you and watching the muzzle. But the patrons are another thing. I don't know how many times some clown came in our store and had a loaded gun in the case they wanted to have the gunsmith look at or wanted to trade it in. Of course they never mention the gun is loaded before they hand it to the clerk (who discovers it's loaded because he checked). Then these same simpletons waive their guns around while looking at them or showing them.

Don't get me started on the clowns you see at indoor ranges. I've walked off more times than I care to remember because some idiot pointed a loaded weapon down the firing line... and after repeated requests to watch their muzzle continued to do it. I just pack up, leave and let the guys up front know they have a statistic brewing on the range.

When I get one of those who know which caliber is best and need to tell me about it, 40 cal 45 cal 44 mag. I ask them if they had any idea just how many people have been killed by the 32 auto cartridge in the past 100 years? their eyes glaze over and have a look of disbelief across their face :what: there have probably been more people killed by the .32 than all the .40's ever made! I love to mess with their world........

I still prefer 45 myself.:D

It's like going to Wall Drug, only with many locations on the map.

Yeah, but I bet they don't have cowpie frisbees like the one I got years ago at Wall Drug! :D

"Last week I ducked a bit when this idiot was waving a pistol back and forth while telling me something. He noticed me duck and said "Don't worry, it's not loaded.""

Years ago I was in a gun shop up on Long Island, I was friends with the owner and was behind the counter, He handed me one of his personal gun with the mag out, it was a 1911 with crimson trace grips, he says "TRY THE TRIGGER PULL" I aimed it at the rear steel door in the back of the building........ I stopped took the safety off and pulled back the slide........ I handed it back to him and asked do you want to clear the chamber first!!?? unfortunately there are "it isn't loaded people" on both sides of the counter!

you didn't know that a .40 can hit your toe and kill you?
Where did this guy come from? rookie

That would not put me off from buying there if the price was right. I am at the point in my shooting after so many years where I think I know more than most "young fellows" who wait on me. I find his opinion more entertaining than offensive. I would tend to make friend s with him and argue back rather than be offended.

The Cabela's in La Vista, NE is relatively new and they have a terrible selection of holsters. And rude salespeople to huff and puff when you ask for one.

Have some fun

Last time I was in a store staffed by dummy I was informed that the Winchester White box 45acp was all seconds and rejects from military contracts. I had five boxes in my arms and five more on the counter as they were on sale. I replied that he could keep his as the store down the street had the "real" Winchester White box that was all first line fresh perfect ammo and I was going there to buy. :neener:

Good stories guys...

I forgot to mention, all the powder is kept in back. They only carry Hodgdon. I asked for a pound of titegroup and the clerk came back with longshot and said it was the only powder he could find.

ok this is what i've HEARD:
a well placed shot will take down BG
a BG doped on PCP might not be so responcive to .38 or 9 mil.
therefore if i know BG attacking me is on PCP i would probably want a .45.
being that BG is not normally on PCP. i think a 9 would be just fine.
go to walmart for ammo. just make sure to double check what they give you cause the girl behind the counter usually does not know ANYTHING. its cheaper. if you can't get it at walmart then go to your local homegrown gun store.

a bullet's a bullet. if a 9mm hits vitals, the bad guy is going down. same with .45. no .45 will hit someone in a non-vital part and incapacitate them.

Remy Martin, a female rapper, shot her FE<ALE friend with a .45 caliber TWICE in the stomach after a dispute here in New York a few months ago. Result? The victim was conscious and walked into the hospital where she was hospitalized for 16 days.

Conclusion: .45 aren't the end all be all.
