My Smith M41 doesn't like Winchester

I just bought a new Model 41, 22 Smith and Wesson. I first went to the range with a brick of hollow point Winchester ammo. I had FTFs, FTEs, and even got one stuck in the chamber. That ended the shooting session with the 41.

Went back today with CCI solid points. The Model 41 digested them all without a single hitch or glitch.

I also had a box of Federal solid points. There was one stovepipe. But other than that, it was good.

Anybody have any insight as to why the gun doesn't do well with a particular type of ammo?

My Buckmark isn't too fond of Remington target ammo. Since I have several thousand rounds, I'll be looking to sell or trade the Remingtons. Like Owen said, .22 semi-autos seem to be picky. Some manufacturer (Federal?) recently came out with a line of .22 LR supposedly designed specifically for .22 autoloaders with the goal of improving reliability.

could it also have to do with the fact that the Winchesters were HP, and the rest were solid point?

I would have thought that. But several of the Winchesters failed to ignite. They were chambered and the rim substantially dented, but did not fire.

Plus, on two occasions, the Winchesters would not extract.

That wouldn't have anything to do with the hp.

Most 41s and lots of .22s in general, with the exception of most Rugers, are picky about their ammo. CCI SV is the S&W factory recommendation. Win Xpert and Federal 711B won't go through a mag worth in either of my two 41s. CCIs on the other hand, run 500 rounds without even thinking about cleaning.

The amount of lube on the bullet seems to be a major determinant...CCIs seem cleaner and consistently less lube than many other brands.

I have no problem with Winchester Super X hollowpoints in my Model 41.
My pistol absolutely refuses to function with any kind of Eley ammunition including the Remington/Eley loads.
I think the fact your gun is brand new may or may not have some reason the Winchesters don't function.
Then again if the loads were cheap promo stuff that may have something to do with it too.

The fun in owning a quality .22 target pistol is finding the ammunition it likes best.

I use Wnichester Super-X round nose in mine. They work well and are quite accurate.

+1 Try other ammo...

The very reason you should try as many types of ammo as possible in a .22 rimfire. The guns can be very picky about what it prefers. There is no rhyme or reason as each gun is an individual. You really can't base what your gun will do from a recommendation of someone with another gun (even if it's the same model).

My 41 shoots a slightly tighter group with T-22. But I can't seem to get a box of T-22 where all 50 will go off. CCI SV solved that problem and I've had maybe 2 out of a case of 5,000 not go off. My second case which I've worked about 1/2 way through has not had any duds so far. Having a dud in a rapid fire string is a bad thing.
