Speer / CCI 22LR Standard Velocity Ammo Problem

Up-date:

CCI / Speer sent me four boxes of new ammo to replace the four boxes I sent them. No explanation. I called them and was told that the ammo I sent was within specs. Very disappointing. Looks like I will have to switch to lighter slide springs in my match pistols if I want to use this ammo. Based on what others have shared on this thread and some of the competitive shooters at my local gun club, I’m not alone with this problem.

CCI / Speer has apparently lost sight of the value and revenue generated by competitive shooters...probably another consequence of the ammo shortage. My guess is that their attitude is that if they don’t sell their products to competitive shooters someone else will buy the ammo. What they have forgotten is that nothing stays the same forever. Competitive shooters have a long memory. As for me, I located a source for standard velocity Aguila ammo at 8 cents a round and bought 7000 rounds of it. It’s a bit hotter than the CCI / Speer (1130FPS compared to the CCI / Speer stuff at 1070 FPS) but my match pistols shoot the stuff into one hole with no failures to run. Problem solved!

Look for a bulged case head. If bulged, it pushes the fired case off the bolt face before brass can be ejected. It was std vel in Rem or WW, forget what one? High Standards could not run it Ruger Mk 1s could.

No bulged case heads.

I picked up a case of Norma Tac 22 to try and it works well in my Mark IVs. No failures but the lube sure is greasy. Make sure you clean your gun after every use.

I also used it in my 617 revolver. After 4 reloads it was very difficult to eject the cases. I blamed it on the lube. I then used a finishing reamer on my cylinders and now I can load at least 10 reloads with no troubles.

I only have 6 bricks of CCI SV left and I'll use them for practice or in the revolver where if one doesn't go off I just pull the trigger for the next round.

CCI SV was my go to round for at least 30 years...competitively priced and match grade accuracy. It’s just a shame that their parent company has gone this route. Another American icon destroyed by a cheapened product and a volume business model where one size fits all. Winchester went this route years ago. Back in the day the Winchester Mark III and Mark IV was some of the best target ammunition ever made. I wouldn’t sweep the stuff they make today up off the floor. About all you can say for Winchester 22 ammunition today is that it goes bang when you pull the trigger,

Fixed it for you.

i was lucky to find four 500 round packs of cci sv at walmarts here and there for $25 each over the past few weeks, but supply is gone for now. i was surprised by how well they ran through a ruger sr22 pistol. out of 1800+ rounds maybe just 5 fte/ftf. they have really helped hone my abilities with the sr22, so the sv performed its intended purpose perfectly. for carry the sr22 is loaded with cci minimags.

Last week at walmarts they would only sell my one single 50 round box of CCI SV and even though there was a lot of it on the shelf. I will try tomorrow and see if they will sell me more.

CCI standard velocity gives constant misfires in my S&W M41's and in my Ruger MKII's.

same lot gave good accuracy and 100% ignition in a rifle

The box I have wouldn't go off with three or more clicks in my rovolver, I even spun it in the chamber and it still didn't go off.
Glad I only bought one box of 100.

That figures. Local Runnings (farm/ranch supply) has CCI standard velocity in 50 round boxes priced at $3.99. At first I was happy to see it, but after reading this I am more likely to buy Aguila for $3.79 or less.
