My stolen rifle recovered!

Local Fox TV news had a piece about crime guns on the street. In Washington DC they are on the street an average of 15 years. They interviewed one gun runner who had a Mac 10 (I think) for his own personal protection. Looked kind of beat-up.

My nextdoor neighbors 16 y.o. punk son broke in my car and stole a 9mm pistol. Luckily, the cops got it back before it was used in a crime. It took about 6 months to get the police to release it. Punk thief got 30 days in juvenile detention.

Seems like a lot of these kids are very bold, not even considering being caught, or worse. If they want it bad enough, they'll get a hold of it.

I was prepared to defend my house... but from what??? My family was nice and safe outside and I should have called and had the Sheriff's Department perform the sweep.

And do what, sit on the driveway while some twerp draws a bead on you, WITH YOUR BUSHMASTER AR-15 YOU KNOW FOR A FACT IS INSIDE THE HOUSE?!

You have reason to belive there are armed intruders inside your house (armed with your weapons.)

While you possibly could have immediately jumped in the car and got the f--- out of there, that still takes time and provides the burglers with oppertunity to fire on you with a high powered rifle. No, when dealing with a rifle threat armed with a handgun, I would go TOWARDS them, just as you did.

Artherd,

Point well taken. I guess instinct took over and I felt the need to clear the house and assure it was safe. I'm sure there are pros and cons there.

I can only imagine my wife and kids' reaction sitting in the driveway if shots were fired in the house. Maybe that's worth sitting down with them and discussing.

As a former firefighter, I know only a small percentage of families have an efficient fire drill or discussion around necessary actions. I suppose an "intruder drill" would be just as beneficial.

Such preparation would be like the gun itself; hope you never need it but if you do, it's there.
