Hey everybody. I need some advice on grips for my two N-Frames.

The first is my 5" 629 Classic .44 Magnum. I shoot this one the most, so I've got Pachmayr Decelerators on there, that fit my hand quite well. I'm wondering about the Hogue recoil-absorbing monogrip that comes standard with the .500 Magnums, though. How do you like this grip? I think it'd be good for the 5" gun because this is the one I take shooting the most, and shoot the hotter rounds through. My big question is, is the grip cleared for a speedloader? The standard Hogue monogrip isn't cleared properly for speedloaders, in my opinion. On 7-shot .357s, for instance, they interfere with ejection as well.

The other gun is my 3" Model 29 "Bounty Hunter". I use this gun for carry. It's equipped with a Hogue Monogrip currently, since the Pachy grip it came with didn't fit properly (if you tightened it to where it didn't wobble, the screw would stick a quarter inch out of the left grip panel). The Hogue is comfy, despite the exposed backstrap, but is too clingy for proper concealment. Clothing sticks to it and drags on it.

What would be some good wood grips for this gun? Something that fills the hand and undercuts the trigger guard, and has enough room for all of your fingers? Even though I only shoot downloaded rounds through this one (I'm trying to decide if my carry ammo is going to be Cor-Bon 165 grain or Winnie 210 grain Silvertips; neither load is hot for a .44 Magnum), you still need all your fingers on the grip to control a .44.

Advice? What grips do you guys like on your .44s?

Hogue's rubber stocks do not cover the backstrap. I have a set on my 629 and I'm looking to change them. The 629 is for "hot" hunting loads only.

As far as wood stocks, try the Jerry Miculek style stocks. You can get them from his website. Another style to try is Eagle Grips. They make some nice stocks. I have a set of their "Secret Service" stocks on my EDC N-Frame.

I greatly prefer Ahrends grips on my revolvers. They look great and fit my hand like a glove in the N frame.

I also like the Ahrends, my vote for best looking. Downsides; not extended "tall" enough for weak hand to grip the bottom. Needs a little sanding for easier insertion/extraction of longish cartridges.

I have never shot an X frame, but that grip feels real good hefting one and I believe would control recoil better than anything out there. May also need customizing for extraction. Flip side is it would be horrible for carry, my 2 cents. My couch is comfy too, but I don't take that with me everywhere.

My favs for the N frame; the Miculek grips win hands down. They fit me perfectly, your results may vary of course. You just grab 'em and draw, no finger grooves, no checkering, they will find the perfect grip for you once you start pulling the trigger and they push into your palm under recoil.

I had one of the Hogue rubber grips that covers the backstrap on an N-frame and IMO it does a great job of absorbing recoil. It is a comfortable grip and the one I had was a great fit for my N-frame. That's the grip I would choose for a heavy-recoiling gun for general field carry or to do lots of shooting.

For a carry gun I would probably (and do) choose Ahrends grips.

Nightcrawler;

I have the S&W 500 grip you're talking about on my S&W 329. It really does work, and I definitely need it when working with full house .44 loads in a 26 oz gun. However, I have a quite large hands, and my hands barely fits those grips. I find it slightly difficult to shoot double action with those grips on, since the length of pull is so long. Depending on your hand size, you might find differently.

However, the grips are definitely worth a try. I bought them directly from S&W, and you could probably ebay them or sell them here for not much loss if you decide they don't work.

i like the laminated hogue mono-grip on my s&w alot! they are finger grooved and fill my hand nicely,i'm usually not to worried about recoil absorbsion and the stock is a little smaller than the target stocks that came on the gun. i have small hands so it fits me well...............
