This was in amidst some reloading tools that I picked up at a garage sale. pliers like and made by the Sargent & Co.. The number 5 is stamped on the strange jaws and on the handle. The jaws are parallel no matter how far they are opened. Pictures show max open and closed jaws. The large black pin is .125" and is not removable and looks like it's main function in life is keeping the jaws parallel. The inner pin which is a hole puncher is .040".
Between the pins are buttons on both jaws which look like they somehow crimp something as they are not a hole puncher. These buttons determine how far shut the jaws go together.

Please let me know if you can identify this tool!

Funny thing is, that looks like a tool for making and repairing leather like belts but the manufacturer doesn't usually make those tools.

Those pliers are Sargent Bernard Parallel Jaw Pliers. They have multiple uses and actually have some collector value.

Edit: Autocorrect got me again!

Edit Again: Above I mentioned the pliers reminded me of leather working pliers but Sargent doesn't make them, I was incorrect, it seems they do/did. Here is a listing for the same pliers I was talking about.

Yes, Jesse, I saw the pliers on the Sagrent's web site, but the odd/strange/mysterious punch pin and the useless looking 1/8" pin are part of a mechanical enigma. I cannot fathom what the heck it could be used for. Certainly not a rivet tool.
Now Arch AngelCD has me interested in what it could be worth to someone who knows what the heck it's used for.:) Collector Value??? The collector would have to know what it's function in life is.
Something tells me I'm not gonna' get rich selling this collector item.:)

Of the two tools in the pictures, the one that might be useful for handloading or reloading is a stapler. Staplers like the one in the picture are used for stapling papers together. A handloader or reloader could use a paper stapler like that one for stapling records together.:D

It is an eyelet tool. They come in different configurations for different uses in various industries. Some are used to install eyelets for making grounding connections on telephone cable, some used to put eyelets in leather or fabric, and many uses in between.

Thanks, Splatter, now I'm gonna' hafta' Google eyelet tool and find out how one is used. My minds eye can imagine many different kinds of eyelets, but how this freaky tool can be used on any of them is beyond me. Thanks all, for your time and trouble.

Thanks Jmorris, now I know what an eyelet tool is. Unfortunately my mystery tool is not an eyelet tool. The .125" pin at the front of the jaws prohibits anything from entering the jaws from the front. That pin never stops blocking the jaws. The 40 thousandths pin within the jaws is the only pin that can be used for punching a hole in anything.----------- A .040" hole is too small for an eyelet and too small for a fruit fly to fly through. I can think of nothing that would require a hole that small and that is the enigma.
