Position Description:
POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the direct supervision of the Lead, Instrument Mechanic performs the full range of work involved in the maintenance, repair and overhaul on foreign and domestic standard and non-standard small arms weapons and accessories.

MAJOR JOB ACTIVITIES:
1. Serves as Journeyman repairer of small arms such as pistols, rifles, shotguns, carbines, submachine and machine guns and other accessories such as mounts, bayonets and tripods.

2. Performs the full range of work involved in the maintenance and repair of small arms.

3. Makes initial acceptance inspection which consists of diagnosis and location of mechanical deficiencies and malfunctions of small arms and accessories.

4. Performs complete disassembly, completely checks all parts by visual, gauge or operational means. Determines exact nature of repairs required. Replace broken or worn parts in accordance with specifications of technical manuals and bulletins.

5. Reassembles weapons completely. Modifies weapons by replacing obsolete parts and/or assemblies in accordance with DA modification work orders.

6. Uses hand and machine tools, precision gauges, hammers, punches, files, stones, test instruments and jigs and alignment devices in making repairs, modifications and adjustments.

7. Performs as primary instructor on most standards and non-standard small arms weapons systems.

8. Build either custom pistols or rifles with little or no supervision, possesses excellent knowledge of gun-smiting tools and procedures, and possesses moderate knowledge of firearms operating principles and ballistics.

9. Read blueprint drawings and work from those drawings under direct supervision.

10. Performs other duties as assigned.


Experience Requirements:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: High School graduate or equivalent with formal military or civilian training in small arms repair.

EXPERIENCE: One year experience in small arms and accessory repairs or equivalent combination of education and experience. Computer literacy preferred. Must be able to speak, read, and write the English language.Must have a valid driver's license throughout employment.Must be able to comply with OSHA, EPA, Fire Regulations, and work policies.


SECURITY CLEARANCE: Must be able to obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance throughout employment.
 
Wish I had the formal years experience. Should have taken the time to spend with the local gunsmith like I had talked with him about. I just decided the other day my perfect job was probably working in an armory. Just no time, probably not as high paying a job as i need anyway.
