NC Vacation rental home OK for defensive firearm?

I will renting a vacation home in the Outer Banks of NC in the fall. I have read the firearms section in the NC Highway Patrol website and the info on Packing.Org but I am left with some questions that a knowledgeable NCian might be able to answer:

1) Does the rental of the vacation home entitle me to keep my loaded firearm in the home, as if if were my own home?

2) Transport of a loaded firearm must either be "open" or with a NC resident concealed permit . So, I am OK if I transport the firearm unloaded (even field stripped) and locked in a box inside my luggage?

I am a Florida resident and have my CWP, but NC will not honor it (yet, keep your fingers crossed!), so I know I will not be able to carry anything beyond my folding knife and flashlight when outside the home, but I would like to have my pistol with me when things go bump in the night!

The term of art is "domicile". Your domicile is wherever you are staying for shelter. That includes hotels, motels, and bungaloes.

My advice is to go the Attorney General's website. In NC it is pretty much all or nothing- gun on the seat or locked to where you can't get it.
State law wise, deadly force applies only to protection of life from imminent bodily harm or death.

I'm not a lawyer, so let's just say I've been visiting the OB regularly for more than 30 years. The biggest problem is whether or not to leave the gun in the cottage ($2k a week houses are cottages) or lock it up in the car the first thing in the morning before you walk to the beach for a swim. Who knows who has a key to the cottage or if some of the windows are open.

I carry a 6" fillet knife on my belt all day unless I'm dressing up a little to eat at a nice restaurant (you know, shoes, shirt, etc.)
If you don't fish - fake it - go in a tackle shop, handle a mullet and buy a new knife.

My plan is to unload my pistol at the Georgia/SC line (Georgia honors my Fl CWP), and then lock it, unloaded and field stripped in my lockable pistol case, which I will pack in my suitcase. That sure as heck isn't "readily accessible"! (Apparently even an UNLOADED pistol can be deemed readily accessible, so simply locking it in the case might not be sufficient)

At the cottage, I will lock the pistol in the pistolcase, which is inside a locking hard sided suitcase, which will cabled to fixed point in a closet. Otherwise, I will lock it my car safe.

I have a 4" Benchmade folding knife, so I don't think I will need to get a fillet knife. The law seems to indicate as long as the blade folds into the handle, there isn't length prohibition (not counting school grounds.)

Wait til you get to NC/SC line to disarm - you're good for glovebox carry in SC w/out a permit.

We vacationed in the OB last year in a rental house. Had a S&W 642, Glock 19 and Marlin lever gun w/us; no problems. Took with us or locked in vehicle when out and abt, in legal transport mode of course. Seems to be some question abt leo reponse to open display in vehicles, so be careful.

While NC considers glovebox carry as "concealed," it is an open carry state. They just don't recognize anyone else's CCW permits.
If the gun is unloaded, in the trunk, with the ammo in a separate container, Federal law applies and you are legal.
