NCIS delayed???

So, I've purchased many a weapon. Never been delayed. Bought one two months ago without issue. So, I go to buy a Bushmaster yesterday and I get delayed. What's up with this? What's the normal turn around? The worst part is I had the day off today and planned to go shooting. Arrrgghhh.

Don't take it so hard. I recently was delayed, I was buying three 44s on one 4473. The last purchase I was DENIED. FBI background check. If you hav a background check, FBI finerprint check or clearance investigation for employment or review; that "kicks" back. I was approved. No big deal but, it does create a surprise.

Well, I've got a Secret security clearance, a C&R License, a FL CCW, and I'm an Army Officer. Guess, that's not good enough for a quick "he's okay" with the system...

Here in ID, if you have a CCW license you do not have to get the Instant check. One more reason to get a license. Fill out your 4473, pay your tab, and take it home right now.

Well, I've got a Secret security clearance

A friend of mine also has a clearance from the SS. He gets delayed EVERY time until NICS gets a SS agent on the line. Once that happens, they clear it through, usually within an hour.

Me, I get delayed and it goes the full three days until they give me the weapon anyway. They haven't gotten a "Proceed" back as far as I know. I'm hoping the CCW application process (and the FBI background check w/fingerprints) I have to go through for Ohio clears that up.

I don't know about Citadel, but for my friend, he needed to have the clearance years ago when he was still on the job. One of his primary duty stations was the ER in one of the local hospitals. This happened to be the hospital that the President would be taken to in the event of an emergency when he was in town. As such, he had to undergo whatever procedure they do to make sure you're not a psycho nut-case and pose no threat to the Pres.

My wife and I were discussing this the other night. I told her of the folks on here, how they get delayed when they have a Federal B/G Check. She was telling me that there's reason codes to go along with the Federal Investigation code. There's different ones for different things and that the one for Federal Employment check is totally different from the Federal Criminal check. It's one of two things, either the NCIC operators can't tell the difference or the Federalesput in the wrong code.

I just cleared a background check for the Fed.gov myself. In fact I get sworn in 9 days from now. Yeah, I know they're swearing me in on a Sunday. I then start training on that following Monday.

What exactly does that entail?

Secret clearance is a pretty in depth report of the last seven years of your life, references, and I went through two interviews with a DIA investigator. Mostly, they check for things people would be able to blackmail you over (i.e., indebtedness, adultery), criminal activity, or drug use.

WhenI did it for the Bureau of Prisons back in August '03 they asked for 7 years, this most recent one asked for 10 years back. They even wanted me to say that I was unemployed from my 16th birthday to my first real job(when I was 18). They want everything. If you have time, look at the Standard Form 85 or 85P on the OPM website. http://www.opm.gov

That should give you some idea.

When I got a job with the TSA, I had to fill out the SF 85....twice. Me being 20, I had a hard time finding people the knew me for 7 years. I don't know anyone from 8th grade

I get delayed everytime for a couple of hours before they approve the purchase.....

NICS is a government run deal, and that should explain why its inefficient.....

I get delayed on a regular basis due to the fact that I am a resident alien, INS have to get involved and that often takes time, fortunately ATF only get three days to deny otherwise it is a done deal. I have had instant approval on a couple of occasions but very rarely.

Ahh Finch I see you work for the TSA, I used to work for them as a Supervisory Security Screener and then I got smart and left that crazy train. Anyhow I had a secret clearance when I was in the Army then I got out and had my clearance bumped up to a T/S for Lockheed. After Lockheed I had to put in a SF85 for the TSA which I told them about my active T/S but they still made me fill one out. Needless to say that did not take long and then I left the TSA and had to get my T/S clearance verified to work as a Civilian contractor for a military base and that took all of 5 minutes. It is funny how sometimes it takes a snap of a finger to verify a high level clearance but then I have waited at the gun counter for like an hour before while he waited on the phone for my NCIS. I usually have no problem though with the check, normally for me it takes him longer to recite his FFL info then it does for them to say he's ok.

I get delayed every time, always have.
One theory, and I tend to believe it, is that if your name shows up anywhere in an FBI file a red flag pops up and they have to check it out.
If it turns out your red flag is benign, they approve it and you're on you're way.
Why is you name in a file? Maybe you're a LEO, have been screened for a security clearance, or any number of other non-criminal reasons.
In my case I'm sure it's a security clearance screening I underwent when I joined the Navy. I did not get the clearance for reasons I won't discuss here but let's just say it entailed a private meeting with a FBI agent who used a red pen on my record jacket. A lot.

Hummm. I've always been approved in about three minutes...except when I purchased my Bushmaster. NICS delayed me for about 15 minutes.

I have always been on a 3 day hold. Having a CCW does not help. No matter what I purchase.

When I was in the Army in 70-73, I was stationed in Ft. Huachuca for a bit. It's my understanding that if you ever had to have a security clearance, you get checked out a little more.

Here in CT fill out the forms,show your pistol permit and drivers lis. they call the NCIS pay the man and take it home. Only once was there a delay and i have a aaaaaaats clearence.

But then again maybe not. I had a Top Secret clearance when I was in the Navy. NICS checks for me never take longer than 5 minutes (done 11 of 'em in the past year).

I've never had it happen to me and I've got Secret and a C&R. Dunno what you guys are doing wrong, unless you forgot to list your 3rd college roommate's middle name or didnt mention that you tried to claim the gun store as a dependant last year.

I don't understand what some of you are talking about. I have a Texas CCW permit, and I never have to have a NICS check... cash and carry after you fill out the 4473. The NICS requirement is federal. If a state CCW permit allows me to avoid the NICS check in Texas, why are some of you in other states required to undergo the NICS check in your state if you have a state issued CCW permit? Does your state still require it?

I know the feds are a little more touchy about multiple handgun purchases, but I think I'd still just fill out the necessary forms and walk out the door. Although, I might have a ATF guy contact me about the multiple handgun purchase (never done one before).

edited to add: I know if you have a common name, and you don't fill out the SSN (optional) on the 4473, it can really delay your clearance. Sometimes, even with the SSN, if you have a common name, you can have to wait. For example, if you live down here in south Texas and have a name like Rick Garcia, or Carlos Martinez, you could have some hang ups.

Nevermind guys, this is obviously where I went wrong...

The reason I can't use my CCW permit is that I have a FL permit which has reciprocity with NC. Don't see much sense in getting the NC one except for two reasons: the very thing that is happening now and the ability to carry in SC. If I get one it'll be down the road, though. No sense wasting a whole year of eligibility--I go to Iraq at the end of the year for 12-ish months.

Just to vent, I went out to my landlord's property today and expelled my anger on some helpless trees at his range. Shot my K-31s for the first time and they were great!
