Hello THR,

I am looking for ammo suggestions for 22 lr round at 50 and 100 yard range. I have researched a bit and was thinking CCI Velocitor - but I can't find any in stock anywhere. The primary application will be punching holes in paper, so I'm not concerned about expansion.

If it matters, the two rifles using this will be CZ 452 (iron sights) and Marlin 39A (scoped).

I'd prefer to find something that I can buy in the $4 - $6 per box (50) range.

Thanks all.

Hummmm I have been using the Aquila 1740fps..If you use it you have to stay with it due to bullet rise?? The Federal bulk and CCIs do not make that much difference on target for me but the Aquila will always shoot high if the zero was set with the other two.

Wolf mt or cci sv.
Slower ammo is more accurate in the 22.

I have not shot any sub-sonic ammo so that is out of my league simply because I do varmints at weird ranges with the .22 and figured faster was better for impact?

If I ever run out of the Aquila I will try some.

These targets are “best of”, but I have had excellent performance with Wolf Match Target was $4.5 a box of 50 and Wolf Extra Match about $6.50 a box of 50.

You can buy 500 round bricks from Champion Shooters http://www.championshooters.com/

Here is a 10 rd. group at 100yds with SK std+ out of my CZ 452 American with Leupold 3-9x33 efr scope. Useing the same ammo & rifle I have shot groups at 200yds. of 2.5" to 3.5"

I shoot tons of .22 from 50 yards out to 300 yards. Since I only shoot for accuracy, I only shoot sub sonic ammunition and I use one of four, depending on the purpose.

For casual plinking, I shoot CCI Standard Velocity. It isn't the greatest ammunition, but better than any bulk ammo in terms of consistency and usually shoots minute of golf ball at 100. I get it in the paper boxes at just over $2.50 a box of 50.

For a local rimfire match that I shoot every week, a match rule is that everyone has to shoot Wolf Match Target, so I shoot up a bunch of this stuff for practice. It's definitely a step up from CCI Standard Velocity, but a far cry from true Match ammo, throwing an odd unexplained flier now and then. Today, after the match, I stayed around and shot five ARA cards, consisting of 125 individual targets. Of the 125 shots taken, 7 of them landed in the 50 ring. Knowing the way I shoot, I'd say that three or four of them were probably because I slapped the trigger or failed to properly follow through, but the other three or four were most likely due to the ammunition.

For no holds barred matches where bragging rights are seriously on the line, I shoot Eley Black Box. I order mine from Killough Shooting Supply. You can order test boxes, consisting of several different lots. When I find a lot good for a particular application, I buy as much as I can afford. At $13 a box, I try to plan this so that I can spread my purchases out across my needs.

For 50 yard shooting, I look for something in the 1060 velocity range. For 100 yard shooting, I look for something at 1080 or better. For beyond 100 yards, I try to get the fastest I can.

Match ammo will have more drop but will always be more accurate, no matter the range. I like Wolf MT for match grade ammo that's cheap enough to shoot in volume.

It was a long time ago but I had a very good day finding out what my marlin 881 and I liked. Get as many different .22 rounds as you can and a note book. Hit the range and have some fun. I think it was a CCI sv load but I have always found Winchester super X to work good in any .22 I have had.

Tony Angel & Slam have it right. In all of my .22 rf rifles, the Eley Match, Black Box shoot the best. Right behind them, is the Wolf or SK match or target ammo (they are exactly the same, made by Lapua, just different name on the carton) I too have had the unexplained flyers from the Wolf / SK and have had virtually the same groups at 100 yds respectively.
The Wolf / SK are fine for practice and light competition and the Eley is used when it counts. CCI std and green tag std are good in my rifles but not as good as Wolf / SK and definitely inferior to Eley BB. As a point of interest, I won the 100 yd match at my clubs monthly Smallbore prone match with a 398 - 27X using SK std + ammo.
YMMV but in my club, the only ammo on the line in our smallbore prone matches is Wolf / SK & Eley BB & (with the wealthy shooters) Tenex.

Wolf and sk /22 ammo are the same and loaded by lapua . The faster 22 ammo drop to a subsonic level anywhere from 60 yards to 98 yards with a couple hypers makeing it a bit over 100 yards. Problems with them is they are allmost never accurate compared to sub-sonics and when they drop below the speed of sound they become unstable and you can't plan for where they will hit as well.. Guys at fun matchs regularly ring steel out to 225 yards with some fairly basic rifles and mid grade ammo. And those slow solids make good varment loads ,shot'm in the head. Enjoy .

We often shoot 1" groups or less at 100Y (this is .900") using bulk CCI Blazer. Green Tag, Eley or Wolf match are better but not by much.

For any sort of accuracy you are going to want to shoot only subsonic ammo.... With supersonic ammo you will encounter turbulence hen the round transition between super and subsonic speeds, which will throw your accuracy off quite a bit.

Ide recommend either wolf or anything from the eley line, it's pricey, but accuracy isn't cheap

I stocked up on Wolf Match Target years ago when I saw how accurate it was out of my Ruger 10/22. Before that I used CCI MiniMags also with great results.

Subsonic will be most accurate but as posted above, we have had very good results w/ faster ammo. The rifle obviously plays a huge part. We shoot faster ammo because we shoot out to 300 yards and farther. The subsonic has too much drop for that distance.

I'm surprised Clayne has not chimed in on this topic?

I've never seen or heard of supersonic loads flying more accurately than subsonic target ammo.

what do you mean by too much drop for 300? subsonic will be more accurate and just requires more dope. amount of drop is somewhat irrelevant, is it not?

I've read at least a few people following this logic. I don't understand how it is that some can overcome the instability that the projectile goes through when it goes transonic, which happens at around the 80 yard line or so.

I haven't had any problems getting out to 300 with standard velocity ammo.
