I forgot to mention that the Taurus 24/7 Pro also comes in a Tactical version now. Have you done any reading on the Taurus yet?

One I'd pay particular attention to is the S&W M&P .40, I've heard very good things about them and they're quite comfy.

For the most reliable, easiest carrying, and highest capacity .40 for it's size get a Glock 23.

I enjoy shooting the following in 40 S&W:
Sig 229 Sport
PO16-40 Ltd.
S&W 646
CZ-40B and 40P

A lot depemds on your need. The CZ's have great ergonomics and are the least expensive.

S & W MP40....

Another vote for the S & W MP40. Took mine to the range Sunday (3rd time I've shot it) and I've never shot better! This pistol is sweet! I'll be buying the compact as soon as possible. :D
Lifetime warranty is great. S & W service dept couldn't be better. :)

I agree, look closely at the M&P, its newer on the market, and people that have never shot one say that it has a sigma trigger, but don't listen to them. I have converted from an XD40 to the M&P and with over 10K rounds through it I have no complaints. MP-Pistol.com

I would look at the HK P2000. They are a little more than $600 but I am sure you can find one in that area. Check www.ordnanceoutsellers.com or the HKPro.com sale ads. I really love mine.

They are very light on the recoil and have 12+1 capacity and look very sharp. They are about the same size as a Glock 23.

I cant say if you will enjoy the looks but that is a personal opinion. At the least they look sexier than a GLock.
