There is a cult surrounding the 3" S&W revolvers in 44 Magnum. Check out the S&W forum: www.smith-wessonforum.com.

Regarding 44 Magnum: carry 44 Special if you're worried about the 44 Magnum being too much. 44 Special should act like 45 ACP (regarding expectations on recoil and performance).

As a general gun, the 44 Magnum is a great reloader's cartridge. Load light for fun, impress your friends with fireballuberwhompums, and carry 44 Specials.

Here is my suggestion for a revolver...
SP101003-1.jpg
.357 Magnum Caliber.

SP101015.jpg
SP101 with the 3" barrel.

Simple and strong.

Nothing wrong with the SP101...but what the hey...if you really want to carry a revolver, go with the GP100. This is the ultimate revolver which tames the .357 mag like no other.

Seriously...it really is not that much larger nor that much heavier than the SP101...but handles the recoil oh soooooo much better even with the most hot of loads. I pocket carry the 642...look...the GP100 is not that much larger...

This 396 with a 3.2" barrel has served me well backpacking and conceals decently. It weighs less than 20 ounces empty.
