I am going to be in the market for a 45 soon. I have a Glock 19 and now am in the mood for a bigger punch. I was thinking of a 1911, however, the look of an HK USP is very tempting and their reputation seems to be way up there.

Would like to hear from HK owners if possible. Tell me your experience.

The USP is a great design, since it can be carried Condition 1 (cocked & locked) or DA/SA. Dunno of any other gun that has those options.

I've actually gotten the lure for USP's lately also, only thing holding me back is the increases in price of a polymer pistol (more than a STEEL NRM COLT GOVERNMENT! :what: :D ) and the sharp checkering of the front and backstrap.

They do point well, and the ergonomics for me is pretty good. The slide stop is in the same location as the 1911s, and the safety is in the similar spot also.

Dont discount the 1911 however. Go hold both side by side, and see which feels, and points better for you. The 1911 is noticeably thinner in the grip, and to me that feels right.

Furthermore, fire a steel framed gun and then fire the polymer framed gun. How does it feel? Any noticeable recoil differences? How does both gun shoot for you? Which are you more accurate with.

For a first .45, I'd go with the 1911 and experience what a .45ACP is suppose to be shot thru first :D. But definitely a good choice if you pick the USP.

Good luck

Great choice! Ignore the 1911 is the only gun ever made crowd. There are other and depending on whats important to you, better choices.

I have the .45 Compact and it is utterly reliable and a fantastic shooter. The ergonomics are such that I don't have to change my grip to do anything to the Pistol.

Solid Gun

Most of my .45s are 1911s, and that is mainly what I shoot in that caliber. But about 4 years ago I got a good buy on a slightly used H&K USP45, so I got it. I haven't shot it much, but last week I happened to take it to the range and put about 70 rounds through it.

I was pleasantly surprised by the good groups and relatively light recoil (for a gun that weighs about 10 ounces less than a steel 1911). I guess I had forgotten how the gun shot. When you combine this with the extreme reliability, high capacity (12+1) and comfortable grip (for my hand, anyway), you get a pretty good combination.

I usually keep the gun in a small steel lockbox for home defense purposes. I have a holster that fits it, but it is a bit large for most CCW use.

USP’s are awesome pistols. I own a USP45 Tactical that has been totally reliable and extremely accurate.

Other HK's I own
P7M8
USP40F stainless
USP9f (on lay-away)

Other non 1911 45's I own
Sig Sauer P220 two tone
Sig Sauer P220ST
S&W 4506-1
S&W Performance Center 945

this forum is about 1911 :) there's got to be something better. I know, I've owned some 1911 myself. HK reigns supreme! :neener:

Buy it and have fun, I did, and I do not regret the purchase. PM me, I know a supplier that sells USP 45 Tactical mags for $40. They work in the USP 45F

I have one 1911 and an HK USP 45 Compact. I consider them my "long" 45 and my "short" 45. I wanted both a full size 1911 and a non-1911 in .45. I wouldn't call it small but I definitely didn't want a 220 simply because I wanted something somewhat smaller.

My USP compact is totally reliable, great to shoot, accurate, and meets all my requirements. I wouldn't give it up for another .45.

I love my HK USP compact, still waiting for the right deal to come along on the full size. The ergos with this pistol were great for me, slightly better than a 1911. Additionally, the HK can stand more abuse as an everyday carry (I felt guilty for the scratches on my Kimber after 5 months of continuous carry). Of course wear is to be expected with a carry pistol, but in my experience the HK has stood up a bit better. For range use I enjoy both equally, but the trigger on a 1911 can't be beat. If you're looking for an endorsement, I highly recommend the USP line of .45s.

The HK is a fine gun but it is quite large. Make sure you are able to fondle one before purchasing it. If you have small hands (like me) you may not like it.

I have a Colt Series 70 Government Model and a USP45 Compact. The Colt sits in the safe and the HK gets carried and shot a lot.

I prefer the 1911, but they are not for everyone. I just feel that HKs are way overpriced for a polymer pistol. I think you can do just as well with a Sig, Glock, S&W, or Ruger once you find one that fits your hand. I would put that money elsewhere - like ammo!

For that matter, SIG's P220A will rival the H&K USP line; and isn't as large!

That might have something to do with the extra 5 rounds on the USP ;)

As always, try before you buy, but I have a USP Tactical and a USPc .45, and wouldn't trade them for the world.

The fullsize USP is absolutely thicker through the slide area, but overall it's about the same size as a Commander-length 1911.

I have enjoyed shooting the full size and the compact in .45ACP. They were very accurate for me and came back on target nicely. In the end I settled on a G30 which just seemed to shoot a little better for me.

Give them a work out and see what shoots best for you. I don't think JMB would mind one bit, despite what his 1911 devotees might say...

I want a USP "Elite" .45 badly, which is the rarer one with the even longer barrel than the "Expert" - it sticks way out there, looking a bit like one of those 10" Desert Eagles in barrel profile. It's just gotta be a supremely accurate and soft shooting though...mmm. They're a pretty penny, though, being a limited run gun. Never owned an HK, but have handled a few, and they seem so finely precision-made. I like the mag release style and the wide range of carry mode options. Somehow they're both overpriced and still worth it. :scrutiny:

There is a commander-sized HK .45 that is accurate with adjustable sights, can be carried cocked and locked, and has the sweetest 2 lb trigger known to man (no overtravel, nearly instantaneous reset). Oh, and it's a VERY ergonomic single stack.

If they made it today, it would cost more to make than the Mark 23. It's called the P9S-45 Target model. They stopped making it 20 years ago.

I own one, and it is a pure joy. You can find them 98% in the $1300-1500 range.

Hmmm, I really dislike the HK. They are a well made gun, sure, but for me personally, they are just unergonomic. I can never actuate that silly little mag release in the corner of the trigger gaurd, and the bore axis seems quite high. But if it fits you, then it's a good gun ;)

The other one to look at, which I belive is far superior to the HK, is the Sig P220 , or the Sig P220ST (which is just the stainless steel variant), but the ST may be a little heavy if you are looking to carry it.

.45 compact with stainless slide.
It's a great gun for carry, it shoots like a full size, and has better sights than most autos.
The trigger needs work, break-in, or I hear the new LEM is good, too.
Mine has broken-in quite nicely.
There are a few other guns in the same class.
Star PD, S&W CS .45, bobtailed commander.
My bobtailed commander is a 10mm dan wesson, and was about $900 (Includes very good nights!)
Phenominal shooter, a little heavy for carry.
My H&K USP compact (Stainless slide.) was $830 and is worth every penny.
I guess there is only one kind of nights available for it.
The smith chief special series of guns are very competent, and should be included in any compact .45 discussion. I like the CS9, but I hear the CS .45 rocks as well.
About $600

Now the value leader, the STAR PD.
It's a light weight .45 that looks like a lightweight commander, but takes it's own mags, and the trigger and grips are different from 1911s, but appear somewhat similer.
These can be had for $300 or so online, and are great shooters.
They aren't as durable as any of the above choices, and I wouldn't shoot +P ammo, or run 100 rounds of practice ammo through it per day, but it's a great budget carry piece (Very light, you'll forget you have it on you.), and mine shoots like a dream.
Do yourself a favor and check one out.

50 handguns and counting and nothing looks better, shoots better or is more reliable than the S&W PC 945s. Dennis

I'm thinking of selling my HK UPS9f for a USP45c. I'm more of a 1911 sort of guy but HK makes a good, no nonsense firearm.

I hear this all the time from people when they first buy their HK's over on HKpro. You must not have owned the gun for very long. The HK mag release is THE best part of the pistol. You can get to it with your thumb if it is long enough, or your index finger on the opposite side, or my method which is to use both.

The other one to look at, which I belive is far superior to the HK, is the Sig P220 , or the Sig P220ST (which is just the stainless steel variant), but the ST may be a little heavy if you are looking to carry it.

I guess the even higher bore axis of the Sig's don't bother you. There's nothing "far superior" about this Sig, its a toss up at best.
