Hi guys,

Flying in from the sandbox to New York, then driving cross country to Arizona. Will be carrying some valuables and want to buy a shotgun, 20/12 gauge shorty, Mossberg 500 will do.

Will be passing through Easton,, New Kingstown, Middlesex, Harrisburg on I-78 and I-81

Any recomendations for gunshops to make the purchase. Would be willing to adjust my route to go someplace really good.

Addesses and telephone numbers would be helpful.

Maybe just stopping at Wal-mart would do the trick.

As I understand it, I can buy a long gun out of state. My residence is Arizona and have a CCW from there.

Any help is much appreciated.

True, but sometimes the problem is finding a dealer that is willing to sell. Some still don't realize the "Contiguous State" law was rescinded sometime ago.

Welcome Back

and thank you for your service. Not too sure about the laws up in PA or in between concerning a non-resident buying a firearm. I know, that should not matter but it does to some I guess. Anyway, that may be the reason you are not getting much response here. No one either knows or wants to touch the subject. I know that here in NC at the wal-mart stores they have a big sign that says if you are from certain states you can not buy firearms there. You might have to keep checking as you are driving and see what happens. Should be some one here from PA that has more knowledge that I. Thanks again and good luck.

mrrick:

Google a couple of dealers in those areas and ask them. You'll be ensuring that they have what you want, that you can buy it, and they'll know you're coming.

If you don't have access to phone lines, give me some numbers of some shops that interest you and I'll call them, explain your situation, and let you know what they say.

Welcome back and thank you for your service,

Jim

Grice Gun Shop, Inc.

216 Reed Street
P.O. Box 1028
Clearfield, PA 16830
814-765-9273

I don't know if you will be pasing through Clearfield but this is a great store with a huge selection. The largest in PA if I remember correctly. :)

Cabelas is in Hamburg. There's also a big Bass Pro Shop in Harrisburg at the Harrisburg Mall.

Depending on how far out orf your way you want to go, what your route thru PA will be, there are a few good gun stores up north a bit, near Altoona and State College. If you're willing to travel up that way, PM me and I'll get you info on some other stores.

Thanks so much for you help. I knew I could depend on this group. I'll be staying in Long Island, New York for a few days before heading west.
This will give me a chance to track some down and make a few calls.

Thanks again.

Several people have mentioned the Cabelas in Harrisburg; there's also a Dicks (they carry shotguns and rifles, and depending on sales you might get a decent deal) and Gander Mountain, which has so-so prices, but there's always *something* decent on sale.

Having lived most of my life far, far away from anything that could be called a decent gunshop, Gander Mountain is not too shabby in my mind, but depending on your route there may be better places along the way. (Are you driving a high northern route, then turning straight south toward AZ, or following 81 to 40 though TN and then Texas, or ... I sure miss making such road trips, but law school makes it hard.)

If you need a place to stay in Harrisburg, PM me; I'm at school much of the time but home in Harrisburg some weekends. Depending on your schedule, I may be able to offer you a place to overnight and a meal at least :)

Screw cabela's, Bassthrowups, wander MT, and the rest of the box stores, go to Trop's or Shyda's
To get to Shyda's coming down 78 get off on 72 to get to Lebanon Shyda's is just south of town near the VA hospital.
To get to Trop's from 81 head south on 83 to 283 and head east about 20 miles.
Both are great shops and should help a returning soldier.
Trop's #717-367-5585, just called them and there should be no problem with a long gun purchase.
Shyda"s #717-273-6572, They also said no problem.

I was at the cabela's and they had an old totally rusted ithaca 37 for $300 so if that does not point you toward Trops or Shyda's I don't know what will, shorty shotguns at Trops are out back by the handguns.

+1 for Shyda's....though my recent favorite shop is Encks Gun Barn...both aren't to far off the beaten path of I-78....probably about 1/2 hour to 45 minutes, not a bad detour.

Enck's caters to the cowboy shooter but has a decent rack of used and new and getting more milsurp stuff.

Heck you could spend a week in Pennsylvania traveling from gunshop to gunshop....I love this state.

Another option: Try Juniata Trading Post near the Breezewood Exit off the Turnpike? They are a pretty good shop with fair prices. Going west on PA turnpike, exit Breezewood; take left on old Rt. 30 (toward Bedford) for a couple miles; store is on your right. (It's before you get to Everett which has a bypass.) After shopping, continue to Bedford and get back on PA Turnpike which is off US 99 (220 north). I stop there every time I pass through.

There is a relatively new Cabela's somewhere in eastern PA. Can't be specific -- I haven't been to it. I know it's near a major highway, because that's where they build them.

I know Cabelas, Gander Mt, and Bass Pro Shops offend some, but they are all on your route and the prices for what you are looking for are ok. Shydas is good too. You may want to wait until you get to AZ and order from CDNN if you are looking for a good deal. Or if you want, you could order something from a local shop and have it here when you are passing through. Seneca Arms in Perkiomenville is a good place to deal with.

Thanks for your service, my family and I appreciate your sacrifice. If you need anything while you're passing through eastern PA. Don't hesitate to let me know.

If you decide to head West across southern PA on I-70, Ace Sporting Goods in Washington is just a few hundred yds of the exit. Big shop, good select. Also go right by Cabela's in Wheeling, WV. The Outdoor Store in downtown Wheeling has LOTS of used stuff.

Thanks for your service. Have a safe trip home!

Stay safe.

Ill say +1 to pafoa.org someone there will know for sure. Im on the other side of the state so Im afraid I cant be of much help.

Being a resident of Pa for 35 yrs up til last summer. I can say Pa is very gun friendly and there is a gander mountain in york pa and bass pro shop in harriburg mall the bass pro is right off of I 81 and very well stocked. There are alot of great gun shops in harrisburg and york areas if you want i could get you listings and find out which ones would be most helpful. Brenda

Also just for giggles, stop in John's gun shop in Easton, the guy has one of the dumpiest down home shops around. West on I-78 to 33N then get off on Freemansville rd and go east a few miles his shop is on the right just before 25th street.

Furious, Nope I stop in Trops about every week, Just ask Larry or Mo
