Need advise for a new pistol?

Guys,

I am in the process on buying a new pistol, I had narrow down my choices to the Ruger KP-89 and the Springfield XD9 Subcompact. I shot a XD40 Subcompact last week and I really like it (the grip is shorter like the glock 26, but nothing that can be fix with an extended finger base plate fron pierce), I have not had the opportunity to shoot a KP89 yet, but I heard is a tough pistol. Does anyone had the experience with both pistols? This pistol will be my carry gun while off duty.

Things in favor for the KP-89: stainless steel, high capacity, manual safety (for those who likes that feature, I don´t really like it). Now thing in favor for the XD9 Subcompact: smaller, lightweight, 10 rounds capacity (more than enough to get me out of trouble) and very accurate. The climate where I live is very humid and hot.

I will appreciate you comments on this matter.

I don't have any expierence with either but I have read several comments on this forum that the finish on the XD does not hold up well.

You are bound to get a message from an XD owner who will deny the rust issue. But on this group, the XD forum website and on Glocktalk, there are many threads about the slides developing rust very quickly - some people claim that it can pop up in 1 day under certain circumstances.

I rented an XD and I liked it, but would never buy one unless they changed the finish.

I sell both, the Ruger KP89, and the Springfield XD's. Both, are great guns
in their own right. However, I too have heard the rumors of the XD slides
rusting overnight. I think this can be avoided by choosing an XD with a
stainless steel slide. So, you pick 'em~ Good Luck!

Buy a real American stainless steel metal handgun: S&W. Has served many police departments for decades.

What is your duty pistol? I'd personally want my off-duty rig to be similar if possible

My duty pistol is a Glock 17. I tried the Glock 26, but I did not like it. Something about the way it feels in my hand, plus I tend to shot low with it. Have not had the experience with the xd9sc, but I shot an xd9 tactical and xd40sc, and I did really like them both.

Kind of worry about the rust issue......

Personally, I prefer the XD. It just fits me better.

It may not be the answer that you're looking for, but a little Corrosion-X every now and then would probably keep you rust free.

How about the G19??

It's midway between the G17 and the G26 in size. It may fit better. You also have the magazine interchangability advantage!!!

Most shooters who have learned on another trigger system find that Glocks do shoot low for them. It's just a matter of practice.

I've had my blue XD-9 subcompact for around a year now. It's been used for EDC for about six months in hot and humid Memphis Tennessee. I drive a pickup with no air conditioning. The side of the slide against my body is covered in sweat at the end of every day. I just wipe the slide with CLP whenever it gets sweaty, and clean my gun after I shoot it. I have had no rust, or even finish wear. Maybe starting to get a little shiny on the high points of the gun, but its definitly not significant. You wouldn't even be able to see it after the gun is oiled. If you like the gun and fits you well, do NOT let the finish rumors scare you off. And like Ala Dan said, if your worried about it, just go with the stainless.

I love my XD-9. I'm approaching the 2000 round mark and I haven't had a single problem or malfunction of any kind. I use this gun to teach beginner shooters and still no problems. If it fits you, I really don't think you will regret an XD.

And as far as the pierce base plate go, if your going to extend the grip anyway I would just buy several of the extended magazines and use them exclusively. I have several flush fitting and extended mags. I use them in the gun according to my concealment needs. Usually I've got the 15 rounder in the gun and another riding spare, but if I need to lose the extra inch off the grip to conceal even better, I just use the flush fitting 10 rounder. I believe the extended mags for the .40 hold 12 rounds.
