i dont really know what im getting myself into but im planning turning my isreali .308 mauser into a sub moa tack driver. i dont really know what parts i need but probaly a heavy target barrel a new trigger and maybe a good long range scope. i want to try to do this for as cheap as possible beacuse im on a tight budget. any advice would be greatly appreciated

perferably under 300 dollars but i have no idea how much all the parts and gunsmithing cost

perferably under 300 dollars

I`d double that to start.
A decent scope starts at $300 a barrel almost that, unthreaded/chambered or installed. Have I mentioned bedding, trigger, lug lapping, action trueing..........

eaisly done in three steps

1. Sell Mauser for 150 dollars

2. combine the 150 with the 300 you were gonna spend on the conversion

3. Buy a marlin xl7 or Stevens 200 and a nikon pro staff 3x9x40 scope

Dick's Sporting Goods sells a varmint type Remington 700 variant in .22-250, .223, or .308 for as low as $500 on sale. The include Leupold scope bases and a (cheap imported but functional) scope with it (though you probably would want to upgrade that. That would probably do you a lot better (and cheaper) than converting your Israeli Mauser- which you would effectively be changeing out every part on except the reciever/mag assy and bolt.

start here for planning your build: www.riflebarrels.com/products/centerfire_lilja_rifle_barrels.htm

$300 really won't get you very far down your path... you'll have somewhere around $800 into the barrel and fitting alone...

next go to brownells and start pricing out and assembling your gun on paper... you can build a mauser for $300, but it won't be what you envision and will certainly use an a&b or the issued barrel...

I'm afraid that unless you can do a substantial amount of metal work yourself on your project, you would be much better off buying a good used Savage which has swappable barrels and go from there.
You would need to D&T the Mauser receiver, alter the bolt handle for scope clearance, install the barrel and ream the chamber to final fit and proper headspace, and that's after action truing and checking for high percentage lug contact and it goes on and on. It can be a daunting, time consuming task, but if you have skills that were acquired over time, and the dedication to apply those skills, the end result can be a source of pride.

couple pics of my builds.

The 22-250 is a Turk action that I threaded a Remington barrel to fit, Bold trigger, Millett scope, Hogue stock, flat black Duracoat finish over parkerized wash.
The 8MM is a Turk action with a commercial Swede barrel, Bold trigger, Corelite stock, cheap scope, stainless Duracoat over parkerized wash
