I am considering buying a semi-auto. I was leaning towards the sks but I would like some advice. I have never owned a semi-auto just bolts, levers, pumps, and single shots. I would like one that has plenty of accesories out there and hi-cap mags. Photos would be helpfull.:)

I hate to sound too obvious, but you're just described an AR15 to the letter. In fact, there are so many options and accessories for the AR, that paralysis by analysis becomes a real problem when buying one. Start simple and build from there.

True but I dont have an extra $1000 to go buy a Ar, I was thinking in about the $200 to $400 range

For what you want and in that price range, it is pretty much a Romanian AK or a Ruger Mini-14. Occasionally, used Norinco AK's turn up in the mid to high $300 range.

For your price stick with an SKS. You can buy 1 and lots of ammo in you budget. Also stripper clips are cheaper that ak mags.

If you would really like the higher capacity, then as others have mentioned, maybe an AK would better fit your criteria.

I have a couple SKSs (and some AK actions) and from what others have said about aftermarket high cap detachable mags for them are, from my recent experience, absolutely correct. My first SKS, a Nroinco, was bought a long time ago before the import ban and configuration rules. I had heard bad things about the high cap mags and really didn't like the looks of them both in build quality and when they are attached to the rifle so stayed away from them. I never actually fired an SKS with one until a couple weeks ago. I did install a factory Chinese 20 round fixed mag on it and it has worked very well. The recent Yugo SKS is totally stock, no issues there.

A friend of mine recently purchased a used Yugo with detachable 30 round mag. Mag manufacturer is unknown. Had I known he was looking at it, I would have guided him away from it. He had brought it to the range one time (its first time out with him) for me to examine and run a few round through it. The mag quality was as expected, not very good, particularly the thin sheet metal used. Insertion and extraction of the mag is not very fast as things have to be inserted just right to lock in. Uses the existing mag latch to lock in and release. Need two hands to remove the mag, one to actuate the release and one to pull the mag out as it is tightly held in place by the stock. On a few occassions, the nose of the round being loaded was not elevated enought to enter the chamber. Where the front "duckbill" extension meets the mag body, there is a small open space. In one instance, the mag misfed and the round was actually protruding through that small space. I had mentioned to my friend that there are factory 5, 10, and 20 round fixed SKS magazines available if he would like to convert it back to its original form.

Why not a nice Saiga in either 7.62 or .223? They're cheap, reliable, well-made, you can do stuff to them later if you want, or just shoot them now. sksman.com has the 30-round magazines, or you can take the whole thing apart and do a conversion.

You shouldn't pay more than $300 for either. I see the .223's for $239 at times, and the 7.62 for not much more.

What you want is a Romainian AK-47, such as a WASR-10 Hi-Cap.
About $325.00.

Or you could go with a Mini-14, which will run about $500-$600. There are a lack of reliable aftermarket hi-capacity magazines out there, though. The Ruger factory magazines work flawlessly but are pricey.

The Saiga website is http://www.raacfirearms.com/

I don't like the WASR, myself. The wobbly magwell done by the dremel hacking to make them feed high-caps bugs me. And the mini-14's barrel is just too darned thin.

As for Saiga, just search for Saiga 223 and Saiga 7.62. A lot of places have them at various prices. They're cheap because there's no shiney website for them, they're just high-quality Russian imports. One of the moderators, here, though, customizes them, and should be able to hook you up.

Here's one place, for example: http://www.thegunsource.com/shopping_viewproduct.aspx?idproduct=56178

is it just me or does that mag seem to be backwards? ( this is an unsettleing trend recently)

If you want an affordable deal on an AK, and don't like the mag-wobble on the WASR, you could purchase a WASR-10 and dremel out the magwell yourself.

The single-stack WASR-10 goes for as low as $200 at Dunham's stores, or www.impactguns.com

You can get info on THR on how to legally convert your WASR to take standard AK mags. This will cost less than getting a full-cap WASR, and will allow you to make the magwell as tight as you like.

AK mags are cheap and plentiful, and there are a good number of aftermarket parts and accessories for them. Note: check out reviews of aftermarket products here on THR before buying; there's tons of curb-feeler junk for the SKS and AK out there, to waste the money of the unwary.

the saiga isnt anymore a "machine gun" than an SKS. both are stocked, semi auto, "low" capacity ( there are soem hicap mags but they are new, rare and exspensive)

Your mom does realize that the Saiga is made purely for civilian sale and the SKS is a surplus military weapon which was most likely already issued to someone in a Warsaw Pact country, right?

Might want to set her straight on that and explain that there's no such thing as a superduper automatic revolver assault rifle antitank machinegun.

Anyway, there are plenty of synthetic stocks for the SKS, among other things. Various firearms accessory sites (centerfire Systems, etc) will send you a catalog or product newsletter free of charge - go sign up for a bunch. :D

Do you already have a .22 rifle?

If you're living at home, short on cash, and your mom doesn't want military guns, why not buy a Marlin .22 and get in some practice in the meantime?

Then in a couple years when you're out and working, you can buy whatever you want.

SKS for sure....best "bang for the buck"...BUT, they CAN be had with (reliable)larger capacity AK mags. Look for an SKS-M or SKS-D. I have an SKS-M that is utterly reliable with any AK mag I've ever tried in it. I'm NOT sure if these are CA legal, but they might be, as they don't have bayonets, flask hiders, etc. They were preban guns under the AWB, and legal for AWB, as they only have one "evil feature"---the detachable magazine. I've seen them for $300-400 on the gun auction sites, NIB.
