The Beretta 92FS began as an all steel handgun. But later they switched to plastic guide rod.

1) What parts did they switch to plastic besides the guide rod?

2) What year did they make the switch?

3) What are the serial numbers of the ones where the switch was made.

Also, I've heard that there are variations in different models. Can anyone give me a breakdown of the difference between, say, the FS and the M9? And what other variations are there?

Thanx.

The original 92 had a frame mounted safety and the mag release was a push button at the heel of the grip. The 92S had a combination decocker/safety mounted on the slide. The 92SB moved the mag catch to the rear of the trigger gaurd. The 92FS added a hooked trigger gaurd and contoured frontstrap. The M9 is identical to the FS except for the markings. No idea when they made the switch to plastic guide rods.

The 92FS was never all steel. You have to go back a few generations to find an all steel ancestor.

Even the 92F, the immediate predecessor to the 92FS, had an alloy frame. The 92F was an aluminum frame steel upper handgun. It was modified to include the S mod which was a hammer pin with an oversized head and a machined slot in the slide to prevent a slide from coming off the back of the piston in the unlikely event of a slide separation.

The 92FS was produced for a few decades and then back in the early 2000s, plastic parts began appearing on the pistols. Plastic guide rods were first, but other plastic parts started showing up pretty quickly.

Right now, there are something like 5 plastic parts besides the guide rods that are typically plastic on the new 92FS pistols.

Could you tell me which one they are? And, do these plastic parts have any metal in them (where the part actually contacts another part of the gun)?

Finally, are there all metal aftermarket parts available for replacement?

Some of the plastic parts are actually plastic over metal. The trigger and the safety/decock levers fit that bill.

The guide rod and magazine floorplates are solid plastic.

There are ways to get metal parts, one way is to buy a used parts kit from CDNN. It has most of the parts. For floorplates & guide rods, I believe you have to go aftermarket.

I don't know all of the plastic parts, but you can probably get an answer HERE

No one has said it yet ,but there was (is?) a 92 FSS model. I have one in INOX, made in Italy, from around 1993. Supposedly one of the S's in the model is for the parts that keep the slide from hitting you in the face. I don't see plastic anywhere except for followers and the frame is beautifully powdercoated silver with stainless slide.
