I'm looking for info on a double shotgun of my grandfather's. It's marked Springfield, J. Stevens Arms Company, Chicopee Falls, Mass U.S.A. on the left and 5000 on the right. The SN is C47XX and is marked on the stock, barrels, receiver, and forend. I assume it's a predecessor to the 311, but would like to know of parts are interchangeable. I ask because it's misfiring at times on the left barrel (after a good cleaning) and probably needs new springs. Just want to be sure I get the right parts. Also, does anybody know when it was made? What are the threads on the sights because they're broken off at the rib (not that they're needed, but while I'm at it...)? The gun shoots great, is fast, and a favorite of anyone who tries it. I'm actually looking for one of my own.

I'm also finishing up some stock work, as it had oil seep into the wood and caused the stock to split easily and repeatedly. The stock has been reinforced, patched with walnut where needed, and refinished (only up to the wrist) with the amber shellac it was refinished with in the past. I see the different types of stocks, but this one actually has pretty nice walnut with some figure and since it's original to the gun it was worth the work to save it.

Thanks for any help you guys can give.

The Stevens 5000 (about 1920- 1931) predated the Stevens 5100 (about 1931- 1941), which predated the 311 with several different letter suffixes and variants (511, 530, Stevens/Fox Model B, etc.- from about 1941- 1988).

I'd talk to Numrich or Jack First Inc. about parts, or consult a good gunsmith.

hth,

lpl
