Good morning All,
I just stumbled on a Colt Woodsman Sport.
It's a 41/2 barrel with a brush nickel finish.
I can't find a darn thing on line.
Help!
It would be nice to know the value and etc.

Respectfully,
CRG

I may be wrong, but I don't believe they were made in a nickel finish. I have one, it was called the Challenger. 4" barrel, fixed sights. Mine is a Series 2. Serial # is C-1xx

Congrats on the great find! Checked a number of sources but couldn't find any reference to any of the Colt .22 pistols having a matte nickel finish. As far as I can tell they all left the factory with a blued finish and plastic or walnut grips, depending on the model.

I did run across a guy selling an old Colt 1908 and heard him call it satin nickel. Which basically amounted to a gun that had zero bluing left but had been shined up. Nowhere near nickel though.

I'm not the smartest rock in the box on this machine!
It's taken some time to figure out how to post a pic.
will call colt today and see if I can get any info.

Thanks
Greene Jeans

Did you buy the gun or contemplating buying it?
I'm having trouble believing that it's a factory finish, but I'm not a Colt aficionado like some here are.

If I owned it, I'd remove the grips and see if the inside of the frame has the same finish. If it does, chances are it's been dipped.

You should be able to get a roundabout mfg date based on the serial # and some research online. Narrowing down the birth year will help you determine what finishes were available.

Discoloration on the thumb safety it looks like. Is it dirt/smudge/rust or is it the finish wearing off?

Colt never made these in anything but blue. If it functions properly, they are nice shooting pistols and reliable. If you don't mind, what is the adking price. Being not original, the value would be strictly as a shooter. In decent shape with original finish, around $600 -$700. In my opinion, about 1/2 that price or a little more being refinished, especially in a nonfactory offered finish.

Depending on what the finish really is and how well it was applied I tend to think your in the ballpark with your price range.

still at a loss here.
Attachment worked just fine.
If on a desktop, you can click the "View Full Size" button to get it to be larger.
You can also right-click on the thumbnail and select "Open in new Tab." If you go to that tab you can right-click inside the image and click on "Save Image Location."
Go back to your original post, click on the Image button (15th from left, next to the "smiley" button). Paste (CTRL+V or right-click and "Paste") the image into the URL blank, and load that.

The Image will insert where ever the cursor was.
SO, cursor here>

That's my long-gone Norinco 1911, via the technique described above.. Voilá, as our French friends say.

Thanks for the reply!
BOD is "60.
They did start the satin nickel process that year. This is a series 3.
Sent pictures to Rock Island Auctilon for evaluation.
The lettering and stamps are just so sharp, it just doesn't lock refinished.
Thanks again.

Looks sharp! I love all 4 of my woodsmen. 1st gen pre-woodsman, 2nd gen, both pencil barrels, and two 3rd gens, one is a match target and one a sport. The match target is my straightest shooting 22 pistol. And virtually zero recoil.

I was in the camp of only blued ones... Neat to find out that its was nickel from the factory. Almost like a maritime finish.

I continue to research to verify.
No one wants to believe it's factory.
Lettering is just to sharp.
Thanks,
CRG

I did find reference to a 2nd series Woidsman Sport with 4 1/2" barrel that was plated in a satin finish at the factory. It came with a letter of authenticity from Colt. It was the ONLY Woodsman ever shipped from Colt with this finish, a true 1 of a kind. Does this pustol come with the letter from Colt? If not, it could be a very well executed forgery. Stripping the bluing off without polishing, then plating the pistol would not harm any of the markings. Hope you e the letter and struck gold. If it does not have a letter from Colt, it would be worth it to have Colt authenticate it and send you a letter from them if it is the real deal

Are you on the Colt forum? I'm sure one of the collectors there might be able to give a faster answer that waiting for a letter.

You know it's not unheard of for Colt to have done a one-off possibly through their Custom Shop. I got this Colt Combat Commander that was part of run for a large Midwest distributor. Normally Combat Commanders were blued or else had a satin nickel finish but these particular guns were done with bright nickel plating along with quite a few other custom upgrades.
