Title sez it all - Need Load Data: 45ACP 230gr Hornady XTP w/ AA#5 or Titegroup

I found info for a Hornady 230 FMJ using AA#5 = 7.8 to 8.7gr, but not sure how that translates to the 230gr XTP bullet (hollowpoint).

Thanks!

I have both 230 grain XTPs and Hornady FMJs, I compared their length and the XTP is longer so that affects case capacity thus increasing pressure compared to regular FMJs. (in theory) Other than that I can't help you as I have never used the two powders listed, one more thing though those XTPs have to moving pretty fast to open up.

The Hornady 7th edition manual shows for a 230 gr XTP bullet in 45acp-

TiteGroup - 4.3gr to 5.2gr (700 to 850fps)
AA # 5 - 7.1gr to 8.3gr (700 to 850fps)

COL - 1.230 - WLP primers (as per Hornady's data)

I've not tried TG for the 230gr XTP's, but did load some TG for the 185gr XTP's and it was a nice accurate load.

As always - double or triple check any load data

If the case capacity is decreased.
What is the difference in length between the two ? If I remember correctly the COL for the FMJ/FP is 1.2", FMJ/RN is 1.24" and the XTP is 1.3"

I purchased a set of Hornady dies---they had an offer on box--send us $7.00 & will send you 100 XTP bullets-----I sent it in w/ a photo of bar code---they sent it back to me---they said" cut the bar code off with a razor & send us the pieces"
I sent it back-----been playing this game for 2 months now & no bullets.
I will not play any more bullet games with Hornady---they can keep their game bullets!!!!!

Sorry to hear that Howard. I received the bullets in about 5 weeks when I bought a LnL AP press. I've also had good luck with their service when I called them.
Not sure why they would be such sticklers for the bar code when I would think a photo like you sent and the sales receipt would be sufficient. Then when you did comply, your still waiting.
Maybe you should call them and ask what's up and give them an opportunity to make it right. I think Hornady is smart enough to know loosing a customer for life is going to cost them a lot more than 100 bullets.

I use 5.1 grains of TG with a 200 grn plated bullet in the 45. The Hodgdon site should have some 230 grn bullet info.

Thanks Glocker! Yeah, Hodgdon's site didn't list the XTP, only FMJ.

They won't lose me as a customer---I have too much Hornady equipment..
I just won't play anymore SPECIAL OFFERS GAME with them---:banghead:

No problem editingfx, hope the loads perform well for you.

I'm with you Howard, when a company offers a promotion I feel it's their responsibility to make it as easy as possible on the customer.

Well, revisiting this thread..... I made some test loads, and they sat on my bench for over a year! (long story) Anyway, had these loads/results in my Dan Wesson Pointman 7 (it's gov't size):
Precision Delta 230 FMJ w/ AA5 @ 8.0 : fair accuracy, VERY snappy
Precision Delta 230 FMJ w/ TG @ 4.7 : accurate, nice soft feel
XTP 230 w/ TG @ 5.1 : very accurate, almost same feel as PD 4.7 load
"baseline" target load Missouri Bullet IDPA #1 w/ AA5 @ 8.5 : good accy, smokey ;)

So, just wanted to bring the thread up to date.

Now that I'm back to the range, I want to test TG more, as it might be the next 8lb'er that I buy. :D

PS - really hope to get a chrono on the next results, ESP the XTP

I gave up on any of those games long ago. I especially loathe & despise those "mail in rebates.":fire: I'm trying to remember if I actually ever got my money out of any of them.

Just throw a "Good for" coupon in the box or make it one of those "Instant Mfr. rebates."

I load the 230XTP with both CCI 300 and RP 2 1/2 primers and use AA#5 powder. I've found that 8.1 to 8.3 grains shoots well and is around factory levels. I've loaded from 7.9-8.3 grains and have settled on 8.2 as my only loads for 45 ACP. These are shot in 1911's and 2 Glock models. I seat to 1.230" which is Hornady's recommended length and use mostly RP cases but also Win and others. At 7.9-8.3 I don't think you'll have any issues with case brand. I think that going above 8.3 and you'd start getting into +P territory.
