I was given a box of Hornady 230gr. XTP. The only powder on hand is Clays. Can't find and info loading data that supports this combination. If anyone could help it would be appreciated.

I have looked in Hodgedon's, Hornady's, and Lyman manual. Don't have access to a Lee's manual.

I got a box of the 230gr XTP from a friend. I think I loaded 5 rounds with 4.4gr TiteGroup and it seemed safe. I can't quote you on accuracy though.

Hodgdon website lists Clays 4.0gr as the max load for 230gr FMJ. You might want to try 3.8gr.

Lee Book Data:

230 grain Jacketed (don't know what the XTP is)

Clays - 4.5 start grains 4.7 never exceed

874 FPS, 17,400 pressure, Min OAL 1,190

Carlos, and everyone else, that data from the Lee Modern Reloading first edition is .7 grains TOO HIGH!!!!!!!!! That load with a 1.190 OAL will likely blister if not blow out a case.

Hodgdon calls for 4.0 as a Never Exceed, and I agree with them. I have tested up to 4.7 with a FULLY supported barrel gun, OAL kept at 1.25 or longer and they were definately excessive. 4.0 is a definate top pressure standard 45 acp load with 230 jacketed bullet. Anything higher is a definate +P load and above 4.4 is getting scary without full case support.

I do NOT recommend going over 4.0 grains of Clays. There are MUCH better powders out there for 230 grain 45acp loads......
