I just picked up this threaded Savage FVSR 22lr rifle for use with my suppressor. Great little gun and only $220. I bought this on a whim without properly planning on what scope it would wear. When I search for this rifle and scope recommendations I am finding guys who are really trying to stretch the rifle out and shoot long distances.

I am a little torn -- I could really use this for short distance critter dispatching but could also see myself using this to take smaller critters up to 75 yards (100 yards would be a stretch and probably never seen).

I previously had a Simmons 3-9x30 scope on a 10/22 and the eye relief was horrible. I would like something that is a little easier to level to the eye and something that doesn't make it impossible to shoot up close. I have looked into tech sights but a) they are expensive, b) I would need to get the barrel dovetailed and c) I think it would make it impossible to wear a scope.

Would something like a fixed 4x32 work well? Thanks!

PGT -- that brings up something I failed to mention. I am trying to keep this in the budget area of $50 or less. I just dropped a lot of money on other firearms and the boss won't take another large expenditure.

Since most .22 are usually small and lighter than most center fire rifles I tend to try and keep it so by not over scoping the thing.
In my opinion only, most 3x9x40 scopes look out of place on a .22 rifle.
I prefer a 2x7x32 if you go variable scope or something in the same size dimensions in 4x.

I hate the look of a skinny scope...might as well have a red dot on there. I like having higher magnifcation and OD as we shoot indoors a lot on a 50yd range that's not super well lit. Its nice to be able to have the target fill your field of view, especially on a tack driver like a bolt 22.

Well there you have it.
Different strokes for different folks.
I own several 2x7x32 quality scopes that on the low magnification even in not so great light clearly seeing at 50 yards is no big deal and I have 60 year old eyes.
It's all in the glass.
Thus, the scopes are not sub $50 in price.

I strongly recommend a Mueller APV.

I have one, and it's an incredible scope for the money.

Save up your money. That is a darned accurate rifle, but cheap glass you won't like, and won't help you shoot it to its potential.

$50 this month, next, and the one after =$150, and then you can START shopping.

Get an adjustable objective. That will help with parallax issues at various ranges, and may help with your eye relief, too.

Texan Scott -- do you mean this Bushnell? I went to Walmart and didn't see anything but this one that looked decent. On Walmart's website they don't list a Nikon 4x in that price range.

sixgunner455 -- good point, pay once cry once, but I need to get this rifle up to speed and don't have the funds at the moment. I won't be taking advantage of the accurary any time soon -- I got it more because it can take my suppressor and is bolt action. If it had iron sights I wouldn't even get a scope for it.

These scopes at Walmart felt huge and were ~ 1 pound each. I think I am going to look for a more compact scope.

Porkchops,go over to www.swfa.com and check out the many brands they carry.
They almost always list the weight of the scope, length, eye relief, etc.
You will definitely find many in or about your price range.
Another low priced but good scope is the 1.5x4.5 Bushnell Banner with the multi x crosswires instead of those weird circle x models.
They are around $65-70.
They hold well to recoil on my brother Marlin 336 so using it on a 22 would be no issue.

It's your rifle and your money, dude. We're just making suggestions for how to maximize it.

I got an FV without the threaded barrel a couple of years ago. Put a set of steel Burris Signature rings on it, and a 3-9x40 Bushnell scope. That scope was one I had lying around. When I get around to saving up some cash, it'll be lying around again and a 4-14(or more) with an adjustable objective will be sitting on it. But it may get a new stock first.

Like I said, a work in progress. It's still wearing the tupperware stock, with a 1" pad to lengthen it, and 1# of lead in the hollow to balance the 22" long full profile barrel. I added a DIP cheek riser, and with all of that, it is an okay stock. I was not very excited about it before I modded it, though.

I expect to be fiddling around with it now and again for a long time to come, but I could just leave it as is and be happy enough. It's an accurate rifle with a very decent trigger as is.

I thought about the FVSR when I ordered this one, but none were available, and I wanted to get to shooting, much as you seem to be feeling. :D

I've used an NcStar that was mounted on an AR (not mine). It seemed functional, and dialed the sight corrections I made on it surprisingly predictably. If the scope you get is as usable as the one on that AR, you'll have fun shooting your rifle.

Have you looked at centerpoint's many offerings? Walmart has a 4-16x40 for about $70. I've heard many good things about it from people that Actually Own them.

Well fwiw most of the reviews on Amazon were pretty positive on that scope PorkChops.
Hey for now what's $30.
It might turn out to be a pretty good deal and if not you can just step up to another scope that costs more.

Thanks sixgunner455. When I brought it home I popped off a few rounds without a scope at all -- was fun but I want to put a scope on this to get it rolling.

Centurian22 -- I saw some online and in Walmart. They look fine but the variable scopes are huge. I was looking for a more compact optic -- this rifle is pretty small and doesn't weigh much.

I almost put a Nikon Prostaff Rimfire 4x on my FVSR. Good glass for the price, and very generous eye relief. I still think this is a good choice for "minute of squirrel" at 75 yards or less.

But I changed my mind at the last minute and decided to build for longer range: Mueller All Purpose Tactical 4.5-14 on a DIP 25 MOA rail. This setup should be good for 300 yards if I can ever find appropriate ammo.

Sgt_R -- great looking rifle. My needs are almost the opposite -- I see myself doing all shooting off-hand and within shorter distances.

We live on 20 acres in the middle of the woods. Our house is one an open pasture that is ~3 or 4 acres and we see very kind of critter out here. We will be getting chickens this Spring and imagine we will be getting a lot more visitors that I will need to dispatch at night. The max shooting distance I have is just under 100 yards.

Haha I know. NCStar is definitely not my idea of quality but I think it would serve my needs. $30 vs $150 or so for a better brand...

I will need to dispatch at night
That is when you need a better scope. It's not the distance. It's the light.

But, the NcStar might work.

The Mueller AVP looks like a very nice scope but is also very large.

Haxby -- good point on more $ scopes gathering light better.

I have day dreams about drinking a beer on my front porch and shooting any chicken-eating critters trying to get a free meal.

I went to Dunham's, a sporting goods store here in the great white north, and played around with some scopes.

This 1-4x seemed to be the clearest of them all and would allow for close up or far away work. It is very big and somewhat heavy -- the only downsides.

Do you guys know anything about fixed 2.5x scopes? They did not have one at Dunham's to try out. The size and form factor look ideal but I think I would be pigeon-holing myself with this one.
