Need suggestions for low recoil defense gun

seriously..... a 9mm carbine should be fine. +cheap.
And 9mm from a longer barrel should suffice(.... unless
you have TEOTWAWKI fantasies.)

both my shoulders need to be replaced and I have 2 buldging discs in my neck. I am saving up to get my 308 threaded and install a JP recoil reducer. Don't forget the 44mag lever gun with a 20" barrel and shoot 44 special. should give you more damage than a 38 out of a 357. I have also put mercury reducers and recoil pads on and in my shot guns to shoot clays. there is also a company that sell a recoil reducer that clamps on the muzzle of the firearm for about $60. It looks like it works great, it just don't look great. If you do a web search for recoil reducers you will find them:D

I also vote for the M1 Carbine.

Defense is going to be close range. The Carbine has the power to go way beyond what would be considered defense ranges.

Also, the Carbine has much less blast and points like a shotgun.

another good choice is a 1100 20 ga.

I don't think you will find a softer shooting shot gun.

Amazing how many people don't read the op's post with any degree of comprehension. Guy's, he said he is on a tight budget, this rules out most of what has been offered as a solution.
The best carbine solution for the money is the Hi-Point in 9mm. Put a red dot on it and a couple of extra mags and you are good to go for under $300. I own one along with an AR and a Kel-Tec Sub2000 and an M-1 carbine, and several AKs, and etc. My recoil sensitive GF only likes the M-1 and the Hi-Point out of this bunch, and the M-1 is twice the money and the ammo is harder to get.
The main drawbacks to the Hi-Point are availability, there's a lot of demand, and magazine capacity, factory mags only hold 10. You can get 15 round magazines made by an after market supplier I won't name, but they are only useful for holding down your spare targets at the range. Oh, there's one more drawback, they are truly ugly. Mine has been as reliable as I could want and accurate to boot. Evan people who hate the pistols usually have good things to say about the carbine, and of course they have a lifetime, no questions guarantee.
I've read that 9mm picks up about 2 to 300 fps from the longer barrel, but I haven't tested it.
In your price range and health situation I think that this is your best bet. Do a search on Hi-Point 995 carbine and you'll find lots of info.

Hi-Point 995 gets my vote too. Put it in an ATI stock, and recoil is nil. quietest gun I own, too. The 9mm is made to burn in a 5" barrel, and that 16" barrel really calms the report down...

My Keltec Sub2k .40S&W is VERY easy on the shoulder. Doubletaps 155gr gold dots move out at 1560fps/838lbs of energy. At home defense ranges, out to 75 yards the sub2k is a pretty decent option. The big added bonus is that it folds in 1/2 making travel with it very inconspicuous. When I travel, mine rides in one side of my laptop case with 4 15 round G22 mags and my laptop on the other.

If a 4lb folding black plastic rifle does not suit your tastes...a .357 leveraction is OHHHHH so sweet;)

Need suggestions for low recoil defense gun

Haven't seen it asked .. what kind of defense? Any other physical limitions? Eyesight? Habitation - apartment or ? Righty or lefty? Firearms experience and time/opportunity available for practice? Sole user or wife/family too? Yes I know, lots of questions and no answers.

FWIW From past service I have mush instead of atlas-axis vertebrae, degenerated spinal column way down through the thoracic to lumbar region and a shoulder blade (the left one luckily) with a steel plate and sewn together hands - hey I'm part bionic and I sure am magnetic :) but with a padded vest and neck collar I still shoot my FAL's and 308's - just not as many rounds per trip as I once did. That said I only keep a 20g pump loaded with 000 and #4 bedside along with a 9mm XDm pistol loaded with Speer Gold Dot +P and a mag of Ranger 115 +P. What works for one might not (and usually doesn't) work for another.

One last thought about your budget: money sure is tight everywhere but you can always get more sometime ... but you only get one life.

Guvnor,

There are bukshot loads available for .410s, as well as slugs. Single shots are the 'budget' guns, but there are not-too-expensive pumps available. I'd look for a repeater.

I have a couple of lever rifles chambered for rimmed handgun cartridges, and they can be finicky about the length of the cartridges sometimes. I'd have to be sure that whatever ammo was available fed well and relaibly before I trusted any of them for defense.

We've experimented with several 9mm carbines- Hi Point, KelTec and Beretta. We wound up with the Hi Point and the KelTec while my 80-something mom wound up with the Beretta. The Hi Points are the ugliest things going but they work, and if one should have problems, the company will make it work- bought new or used, doesn't matter. They have a great rep for customer service. Use only factory 10-round magazines for them, though. Aftermarket magazines tend to be unreliable.

The KelTec is a great little carbine. It folds up for easier storage and can be had in a version to accept one of several different types of popular autopistol magazines. Ours takes Glock 19 magazines, and will accept longer Glock magazines too- for the 17 and 18 as well.

Happy shopping,

lpl

Perhaps I didn't read all the posts, but no one has mentioned 5.7x28?? Talk about low recoil. I KNOW that the stopping power of 5.7 is some what questionable but light, relatively short, easy to handle and a LOT of ammo...I would use it if the recoil is a big concern.

Actually, not a bad idea, although pricey.

Other/cheaper choices.
AR15
m1 carbine

I'd go with the AR if you can handle the recoil... IMHO it has practically NO recoil, but I'm not very sensitive to recoil. I'm sure you can find someone to let you give their's a run beforehand.

HiPoint 995...all the way! Cheap, reliable, no recoil, & ugly too! Nobody wants to get shot with an ugly gun BG's will just run away!

I didn't see anything about a "tight budge" on the original post, but now I see it a few posts down...it would have helped to mention that at the beginning.

However, I don't know that a "tight budget" is.

Give us a $$$ amount, and that should help narrow it down. Depending on what that number is, you might only have 2 or 3 options.
