Need THR help needed choosing a competition 9mm.

Whatever he wants to shoot, as long as it can be competitive on capacity and any power factor requirement that might exist, chances are it can be made to work well.
 
For $800 or so the Colt Government Competition seems like a good value. They are advertising it as competition ready out of the box.

I just bought one today for $750 at my LGS. It's a classic Colt 1911, has Novak adjustable rear sight and fiber optic front, e10 grips, some sort of double recoil spring, and a really crisp, just right for me trigger. 2 mags.

Just my 2 cents. (And this is my first Colt since I started shooting around 1960....)

If 3-gun is the priority, do not think about a single stack 1911. Wide body 1911 (STI, SVI, Para Ordnance) or other high capacity is what you want. In the under $1000 range, Glock, XDM, and M&P are common at matches.
