I hope this ain't too unrelated. I thought maybe you could fire them old guns if you get or make black powder shells loaded to the specs of the time period it was made?
After having them examined by a gunsmith that knows Damascus barreled shotguns, yes.
Also Check out RST, https://www.rstshells.com/ , their shells (except the 'Pigeon' loads and the loads for old A-5) are safe in such guns, after being checked by a "reputable" SxS gunsmith". I bought some of the 2 1/2 " 16 ga. shells, they are good loads.
If you get it checked by someone that knows what they're doing and not just some run of the mill gunsmith it would be safe to fire 2 1/2 inch black powder shells out of it.
