thanks in advance for any responses, the short version is: I am considering taking a new job in Colorado but I know absolutely nothing about the area or state. I only know what I hear n the news that the state is being overrun by tree hugging anti-gun hippies. is this true? is it becoming hard for gun enthusiasts to live there? I would be moving from Indiana and we are very free in my opinion when it comes to our gun rights. also any info on cost of living good or bad neighborhoods? I did notice housing is a bit higher. I have become accustom to walking out the back door a being able to shoot off the back porch. I live on 7 acres in the middle of nowhere and it only cost me 200k with a 2000 sq ft house and 1500 sq ft barn. the job will put me leaving no more than hour outside of the Denver metro area. again thanks for any help guys

You described Denver...not Colorado. The rest of the state, other than Denver/Boulder is quite conservative and gun-friendly. What part of the state are you thinking of moving to?

will have to stay with in an hour of Denver. didn't mean to offend anyone from Colorado but like I said I only know what I hear on the news and talk radio that's why I am asking

This. Unfortunately, Denver does have a disproportionately loud voice at the moment. We're having to deal with a couple of BS laws they rammed down our throats in '13, but it's still a pretty gun friendly state. Lots of ranges, lots of shooters, and aside from those 2 new bits of legislation, pretty lax gun laws. statewide open carry except for Denver, shall issue CCW, all NFA stuff good to go, state law preemption (no local government may enact/enforce laws stricter than state law). City of Denver's OC ban and AWB were upheld under "home rule", but they can't enforce their AWB against non-residents of the city & county.

You'll probably want to look at Douglas & West Elbert County, then. Where I'm at is about 40 minutes from the tech center in the absence of heavy traffic. This county is rural, affluent, and heavily pro-gun (even the Democrats, which are only about 1/4 of the voters here).

Housing has definitely gone back up quite a bit in the last 2 years, but there are still affordable places. I bought mine (1,800 SF on 6.74 acres w/out buildings) for $237K in 2004; it'd probably go for about $325-$340K today.

OP... for your own good and edification, I think you need to plan a trip out here and check things out for yourself, first hand. You kind of broad brushed Colorado w/o ever having visited the state.

Yes, there are issues with liberals and anti gun folks, mostly in the big cities on the Front Range. And yes, there have always been the hippy types doing their thing and making politics difficult for Second Amendment folks here in Denver and Boulder. And yes, Denver is a sanctuary city and there are now multitudes of people moving here, creating congestion on the highways and roads,

I highly doubt you will find a house from which you could shoot off your gun from the back porch... anywhere within an hour's drive of Denver. Yes, you might find a remote location to live. But the commute to Denver will be horrendous especially when the snows start to fly and the mountain or rural roads get jammed with snow and blowing drifts. Doing that commute every day, back and forth in traffic and bad weather will get old really fast!

I've been here in Denver for forty one years and have seen Denver and Colorado change... and NOT for the better!

Again my suggestion... come on out here for a week or two and drive around and see for yourself. Denver quite frankly is not my ideal city to live in anymore.

Magpul didn't seem to think staying was worth it. http://www.guns.com/2014/01/07/Democrats-blamed-magpul-leaving-colorado/

I've been working projects in IN for the last couple years and there is not a great deal of difference in our gun laws aside from the asinine BC and mag restrictions.
I believe CO is one of the best non Constitutional Carry states out there with regards to restrictions.
Denver is a whole other ballgame. I live out west close to the town where the waitresses OC. Shame we are regulated by our population centers but our lesson is one any state should learn and understand in that regard.
If you have to live within an hour of Denver and already have a job and home your happy with in IN, I'd think real hard about the move. I would not do it long term from where I'm at.

Almost every State seems to be overrun with them, especially toward election times. They call them "campaign workers" and they get here just in time to establish residency. (No documentation, just anecdotal, but consistent observations by yours truly.):D

But Colorado is also known as the State which recalled two important members of the State Legislature for their anti-gun stances. (And darned near got a third booted out ignominiously by recall efforts. She resigned.)

FYI, The "Front Range" refers generally to the spine of mountains and foothills which run more or less N-S through the center of the state. I am including a link to the weather map, which I hope generally shows the topography of the State. (If not, you can click around in it to get the topography as well as roads and rivers etc. to show up.)

For your convenience in discussion, I am also including a map of Colorado Counties.

http://dlblanc.com/coloherp/geo/cou-map.php

Jefferson County is just west of Denver and includes both Plains and Mountain topology as well as some major routes to recreation areas such as skiing, hunting, etc. I-70, a major E-W national route, runs through it.

In addition, it might be interesting to know that the new Sheriff of Jefferson County, Jeff Shrader, was elected at least partially on a pro-2A campaign stance.

Terry, 230RN

NOTE: I live right at the edge of the mountains in "Jeffco" and commuted to downtown Denver, eight or so miles away, every day. (If you want to know some slick routes around I-70 traffic, let me know. I'm an expert on that.) However, if your work will be at "The Denver Tech Center" or generally south of Denver, getting there from I-70 will be a bit of a bear.

I lived in Lone Tree, Douglas County for several years. It is a south Denver suburb. I liked it well enough as I was commuting to the Denver Tech Center. I started getting tired of the area, so was looking to move to Evergreen, Conifer, and then almost bought a place in Bailey near the Pike Forest. I then realized the commute would have been difficult, especially from Bailey.

The Front Range has had a lot of Californians, and easterners transplant (of which I am one being from PA) that brought their liberal, anti gun views. Heck the Governor, and former Mayor of Denver is a transplant from Narberth, PA, outside of Philly near where I grew up. He is a classic 70's lib. The pot laws, and recent anti gun legislation which forced recalls, BTW is evidence. However, I would not let it dissuade me from moving there. Most are places are more conservative, and even living around Denver is fine as the gun laws are still good. Just bring lots of standard capacity mags with you.

The traffic will be your biggest problem unless you will be working somewhere that is served by the tax gobbling light rail system. As the others have said, most of the areas around Denver are not bad but are filling fast due to people escaping the metro area or moving here from out of state. Loveland was less than an hour commute from Denver when I moved here in 1987 but now the traffic on I-25 is horrible almost all the time and the state still dithers about the need to add lanes. There are a number of shooting clubs and ranges up here but the density of development precludes shooting in most of the areas from your own property.

Magpul didn't seem to think staying was worth it.

Magpul made good on a threat issued while the dems were hastily trying to ram 5 anti gun bills through. 2 became law.

Magpul also got huge financial incentives to relocate. It was a smart business decision.

But ... they did it. Business decision good or bad, they did it. Good business decisions and standing up for gun rights are not mutually exclusive.

I can tell you that Teller County is awesome.....30 miles west of Colorado Springs. Its VERY gun friendly and everyone I have met has been extremely nice.

I only have to drive 1.5 miles to the Natl Forest and I shoot to my hearts content.

The commute to Colorado Springs is about 40 minutes for me, but totally worth it!

Sorry, can't help. I'm in Southern Colorado and darn the traffic up there in Denver. Denver has a lot of stuff too.
