Neighbor Group Confronts Us As Poachers

i value my permission to hunt a few properties in SW OK and TX. Since 1978 i've had permission to hunt small game, coyotes and now hogs on about 2,500 acres. No one hunts deer there, they die of old age because the land owners love deer.

Another property is owned by a fine gentleman who can't tell hunters no. Sometimes i'm the only hunter, other times there's a half dozen hunters on the half section.

In decades of hunting i've met one person who questioned my right to hunt private property. Couple years ago i was evicted by the land owners SIL who disregarded my written permission to hunt. Months later i met the land owner in town and explained that her SIL evicted me. SIL never told her about that. The lady said: "Continue to hunt there when you want, by the way my daughter divorced the lazy slob."

Well I live in Oklahoma as well and know many farmers and ranchers. Many of the properties that I and a friend of mine have permission to hunt comes with 2 caveats. 1. If you see a vehicle that doesn’t belong, call the wardens. 2. If you encounter someone hunting, run them off.

People around here usually know when they’re trespassing and if caught will just leave. On the rare occasion they try to tell us they have permission from the land owner, we ask them the landowner’s name and then we pull out our phones to call. It’s actually worked out a few times that the landowner had actually given them permission. They just hadn’t informed us. At that point we all shake hands and choose a direction to go hunt. But sually at the point the call is initiated, if they aren’t supposed to be there, they walk away. It’s not at all uncommon for us to drive our friend’s properties and look for trucks that don’t belong. We all watch out for each other.

Law in OH requires everyone hunting on private property that's not theirs to carry a signed and dated permission slip from the owner giving authority to hunt.

Be interesting if the relatives in the OP situation were the ones dropping off hunters.
