Never letting my wife shoot again!

why women shoot well starting out

I am generalizing, and this does not apply to all women or men by any means. However, it is my belief that many female shooters approach firearms with a clean slate, not as many preconcieved ideals, machismo, and pressure on self to perform well at the range as men. They will actually listen to instruction and apply it earnestly. Because of these reasons, in my opinion/experience, many women will have instant success as the result.

If I had a girlfriend/wife/etc.. that was not into guns or was afraid of them. I would get(if you dont have-you shoudl be ashamed of yourself) a Gas blowback Airsoft gun and try to get her to shoot it. Chances are she is gonna love it and form there you can try to go to real guns. I can not say enough about airsoft guns. They are the main cause of my fiancee being able to outshoot most beginners out there. It has also helped me along with helping me with practicing clearing rooms.

It's especially bad when my wife outshoots me w/ MY guns:banghead:

I don't outshoot her w/ hers:scrutiny:

If she didn't prefer the wheelies I'd be out a carry piece:eek:

Cogster1 - I have it twice as bad!. My wife, who has NEVER held a gun, much less fired one, completed a carry permit class with me. The firing portion was unreal. She shot 45/50 from various distances. Needless to say, she passed. She shoots my S&W .38, her Bersa .380 and our new Ruger 9mm. WE shoot at least once a week.

And my troubles continue. We have been trying to get my single daughter to get her permit, but she wanted to try it out before spending the time and money. She, like her mother, had never held or fired a gun. Her 1st experience was with an instructor, using a Glock 19 / 9mm. Her 1st shoot @ 10 feet was just left of center. She was hooked. After 7 trips to the range, she recently shoot 49/50 in the orange center @ 20 feet, with thew only one outside, just out.

She can shoot with either hand, as far as 75 feet and hits the outline everytime. She has fired my .380, the .38, the 9mm and a rental .40. I surrender!!!!!!:cuss:

My daughter is the one in my family that puts the rest of us to shame with a pistol. At 15 yds she can almost cut holes with her 9mm when she takes her time. A buddy brought his glock .40 cal with a laser one day and she was trying it out. She could hold it on target for 30-45 seconds and you could barely see the laser dot move. Amazing.

Taught both my parents to shoot. It's a good thing we don't keep score, because Dad sure would be embarassed. My girlfriend has shot pretty darn well the 2-3 times I've taken her too, no prior experience. So I'd agree. Might be steadier, definitely more patient.

years ago i mean maybe 15 years ago my wife used to come shooting with me. she used to like to go. I ask her all the time now if she wants to come. However it doesnt interest her anymore. For all you guys that complain about their wives out shooting them. jus deal with it and treasure the times you have with them while it last. Soon enough you will find yourself going to the range or with other people and them not wanting to have anything to do with guns again. then 10 years will past and you will miss the times you used to have shooting with your wife.

Dont be embarresd about your wife outshooting you. Cherrish that moment. for once its gone, its gone.

i wish i had pictures of my wife and i shooting together like you guys.

After shooting my 3"1911, my wife wanted something with less recoil. So she picked out a 4" Smith 686. You don't want to get on her bad side, she can frigging SHOOT that thing! Great gun and i have no ego problems..as long as i'm still better with the .45!

My wife is wayyyyyy better with my 1911 than I am , the way I look at it all it means the home will be well protected when I'm not there . And my daughter , well lets say I have to keep my gun safe locked or she'll be out on the back 40 with my M&P 38 revolver 24/7 .

Never underestimate a female shooter

The "common wisdom" is that, assuming there are no recoil issues going on, women tend to walk into learning to shoot with less bad habits, pre-conceived notions of "how it ought to be done" and egos than men.

I've had my clock cleaned more than once by a lady at the trap range, and my usual handgun range is owned by a lady. I'm sure Diane could beat 99% of the macho guys who show up there with one hand tied behind her back. I'd never bet against her! ;)

Heh, Heh, Heh

I was in High School from 1971-1975 in San Antonio (boy does that date ME). Anyway I was in Army JROTC for all 4 years. This was time they started letting females join JROTC. We had a terrific Rifle Team (22LR and our own range right in the school) with a terriffic coach. (Sgt. Longoria - R.I.P.) We had several girls join the team right off the bat and were superb shots (better than me). They had so many trophies and medals it was embarrasing to poor little male chauvinist pig me.

i went on a date with this girl that I am really good friends with last summer. We went to the indoor target range with my new Glock 22. She shot better than me the whole time. :what: :what: The whole time her shots were closer together than mine. We are going target shooting again in May.:D :D :D :D

Im pretty envious of you fellas.. my girlfriend keeps shooting down my target stand
At least she tries and is open minded about, afterall, I do live in Montgomery County, MD :(

My wife is a pretty good shot with a pistol, but has never tried much of anything else.

My EX-wife however, was good with most anything. We went down to the local gravel pit, and set up an Outers trap. Explained the basics of shooting a shotgun, and she proceeds to break 15 out of 20. Never looked back.

I was shooting with a local IPSC club (this was years ago) and they wanted to give a "ladies trophy" or whatever they called it, at one match, but needed at least three women to shoot to give the trophy. The two women who were ready to shoot, talked my ex into trying. She said "What the heck. The worst I can do is third." So she borrowed my Colt GM, which she had never fired at all, and finished 2nd.

Go figure.

I have recently started 2 ladies in pistol shooting, neither of whom had ever shot a pistol before. They don't shoot better than me .......yet, but they shoot better than a lot of the guys I know and they are still beginners. One of them shoots my Ruger P95 better than I do tho. But since I started taking her, I don't get much chance to shoot it either.

2000 rnds!!! Man, I have to save my pennies for every box of 50 I buy. Is there a place to buy cheap ammo over the internet? Even factory reload if there is such a thing

Try outdoormarksman.com.

You can get 1k ammo cans of 9mm for about $100 - these are factory reloads and we use them for range sessions and shooting classes. They're not the cleanest ammo, but they seem to work well enough. We just shot our way thru 1k at a recent 2 day class, and I picked up 2 of the 1k cans at a recent gun show to replace what we shot. They have .40 and .45 in bulk also, I'm sure there's a price diff but you wants more, ya pays more. Good luck.

P.S.- My wife is a better shot than me also. My ego is resiliant enough to take it like a man though. It just means when the bad guys come I let her take first crack at them!

Motor skills....(pun)

I read somewhere that it's because women have better fine motor skills than men do in general.

Which is why they say women make better race drivers, as well. And I've seen it with my own eyes, too.

My wife and I took a private shooting lesson last week. First shot, half an inch to left of the bullseye, second one dead center. The other instructor stopped what he was doing to watch her shoot. Was I jealous, a little, embarrassed not really, but very proud. It had been 3 months since she had picked up a pistol.

My wife isn't a target shooter... she doesn't enjoy it. She is, however, proficient enough to defend herself if needed. She can darn sure keep 'em all on the paper from 10 yards with my 620 smith.

My 4 daughters, ranging in age between 11 and 19, are all excellent shots with smaller caliber pistols and light carbines. They don't care for magnum calibers and heavier recoiling rifles, but with the light stuff, watch out!

I've got video of one of my daughters shooting a bunch of full-auto toys from last year that's a hoot to watch... 13 year old 90lb red head rattling off a mag of .45 from a tommy gun :) You should see the smile!

Ammo

Cogster-

IMHO, for pistol target ammo, Winchester White Box is the most affordable, cleanest, and best value ammo out there. Buy it in the 100 round bulk pack from the nearest Wally World. At mine the prices have gone up lately (just like all ammo) but still the best factory ammo.

100 rds 9mm = $15
100 rds .40S&W = $20
100 rds .45ACP = $27
