Take a look at one and make up your mind in the flesh. The 3" versions are nice little revolvers. They are probably the more popular size. You will be amazed at how light they are.

Also, the 3" would be much better for plinking. Frankly a larger Model 63 or the Model 617 would be better for plinking and target shooting.

Agreed. Definitely need to see one of these in person. Enough of reading about them. Tried to check one out this morning at the local gunshop, but I got there before they opened. I'll be back.

I've got a 617 in 6" and I love it. A short barrel 22 will be to help me get better with a shorter barrel firearm (like my DS), for carrying, and for fun. I think it would complement my collection quite nicely:

4" Python
2" DS
6" 617

BTW, not really thinking of this as a SD CCW. More likely to use it to shoot a possum or racoon in my yard. I've run into them too many times, only to think it sure would be nice to be armed right then.

Thanks

I think either the size will be a lot of fun. You have quality revolvers.

I have quite a few 22 handguns in general. I keep looking at the 317 and deciding not to buy. But I think it would be a blast to shoot. The shorter barreled version without the adjustable sight should not be a big deal in the real world. It is hard to shoot these short barreled snubbies over 10 yds anyway very accurately. I don't adjust my rear sights often anyway which is one of my realities of life.

I have a 2.5" Colt Diamondback in 22. That sure would compliment your set as would a 4" Diamondback. Pricey, I know especially the 2.5". I did not buy it recently after all the collectors pushed the prices up on these not that it bothers me too much as they are like money in the bank.

A local shop has a used 317 on consignment for $400. I'll probably have a look at it this weekend. If it looks and checks out good, I'll probably buy it.

From what I can see in my 26th ed. Blue Book of Gun Values (2005, a bit dated), the value on these falls off pretty quickly depending on condition. It lists MSR $603, 100% at $455, 98% at $325, and 95% at $230. With adders in for 3" ($55) and Dymondwood boot grips ($33). The S&W 2007 catalog lists them at $632 in 2" and $695 in 3". Last I saw one on the Bud's site it was like $547 (Apparently sold, cause it's no longer there.)

I've never bought used, so I'll be sure to check out the sticky at the top of this forum as well.

Thanks to all you THR folks. Loads of helpful information here.
