Alright gang, here goes. I can't find 9mm anywhere!!!! It's a good thing I have 200 rounds left, but as everybody knows, that's not enough. I tried ordering some boxes from Cabelas and they wanted to add 10% in tax:fire:. All the stores have LOTS of .40 S&W ammo. So I'm looking for a pistol in .40 S&W. Suggestions are highly appreciated.:)

Try to get a police trade-in S&W 3rd gen auto, 4003, 4006, 4046, or any other police trade-in from Glock or a certified pre-owned Sig 226, 229.
Police trade-ins are usually very good deals...carried a lot, shot very little, sold at a deep discount!

BP, if you like Glocks, here's my suggestion:

Get a 23. Then for $100, a drop in Storm-Lake 9mm barrel. now you have a 9mm and a .40 s&w. People report excellent reliability with this simple drop-in conversion. Many use the same .40 magazines without a problem with the 9mm (some buy 9mm G19 mags). .40 for carry, 9mm for cheap practice and plinking. What's not to like (if you like Glocks, that is).

In post #9 in this thread I gave some opinions about the Glock as a prior non-Glock guy:

Too bad I sold it last month; I'm coming to the tri-cities this next weekend and could have let you try it out.

Don't care for the 40 S&W round so if you are just buying the gun because you can't find ammo for your 9mm I would just wait out the ammo shortage. But if you truly want a 40 S&W for whatever reason get one. I won't make any suggestions on what model to purchase but I can tell you I will not shoot 40 S&W because of the problems I have had with my Glock 23 and my Taurus 24/7. I got rid of both guns. Oh and I'm not a Glock or Taurus hater I love my Glock 19 and my Taurus PT 92, I am however a 40 S%W hater.

Also having trouble finding 9mm ammo

I have guns in both 9mm and .40, and have also noticed that .40 practice ammo is easier to find these days. It also seems to be priced about the same as 9mm recently, because those who have 9mm have really marked it up. Since I am happy shooting either caliber I have been shooting my .40s more lately.

There are quite a few good .40 guns on the market. I would recommend any of the three I own, a Glock 23, a Sig P229 or a H&K USP 40c. I find the Sig easier to shoot because of its metal frame and greater weight, while the Glock and USP are easier to carry.

There's dozens of fine guns out there. But to help us point the way we should know what you're shooting at the moment.

Also how important is it to you for the next gun to be similar to the first? Is this to carry, so you want it to be as similar as practical? Or is it a chance to try something totally different?

Pending these answers I'll just add that if you don't have a 1911 already then one in .40S&W isn't a bad way to go. Hardly traditional but they shoot with a nice grin making thump.

My dad and I are fans of .40 S&W. I have a Springfield XD Sub-Compact .40 and he has a Sig P229. His Sig is much more comfortable to shoot than the XD, but the XD is much easier to carry/conceal with it's shorter grip and slide (however if you want a full-size grip it comes with a high-cap magazine and spacer to make the grip longer). Both are solid work machines, and shoot accurately and reliably. I keep Hydrashok JHP's in mine, and he keeps Remington JHP's in his. He had to use it to finish off a groundhog our Jack Russell Terriers caught this week. Needless to say, it did it's job.

I have the Taurus 24/7Pro in 9mm and a Glock 17 9mm. I carry a Taurus Model 85 38cal snub nose revolver. I just love shooting and can't just find any 9mm. Besides, I just enjoy buying guns and hoping to get .40 S&W. One of the local gunstores was selling theTaurus new 8 Series in .40 4" barrel for $488 vs. the XD 40 in also a 4" barrel for $438. I can't decide between the two.

And, when is the ammo shortage actually going to end????!!!!

The ammo shortage will end eventually. I would go with the XD I love my XD45. It will also give you the oppurtunity to try a new manufacturer if the list you given is all you have had.

either a CZ75 Compact 40 or a CZ P-06. Both are NICE guns, shoot well and are reliable as hell.

I had a CZ 75B in .40 S&W, and I can certainly recommend one of these. One that hasn't been mentioned here is the Beretta 96FS, and I've seen some great deals on used ones in the gun shops I've been in recently - skeeter_08

The HK USP in .40 SW is a fantastic package. I used to own the USP compact and if there's one gun I ever regret selling, that's it. Fantastic shooter, decent enough for carry, recoil is slight and you can carry C&L or hammer down.

MK40!

It's a small one, and you'd find good times to carry it when few other guns would go with you.

yeah i did the same thing... if .40 is all there is to shoot, it helps to own a.40.... i went with the Beretta PX4 and absolutely love it.
