I love how so many people here think they know what is "hands down" the best .40

I suggest checking out all the different ones yourself, and letting us help you decide between the ones you like.

I've got a Walther P99, HK USP and Springfield XDM all in .40, take your pick. I'd definitely recommend the USP to anyone

The 40S&W is a great round and I can highly recommend either a SIG P229 or an S&W M&P (full size or compact). I have all three and they function flawlessly.

I should add the Walther P99 which I have and like very much. I have Beretta, XD, and CZ pistols as well and can also recommend them, but not as highly as the SIG, M&P, or Walther.

I absolutley agree with trying as many guns as you can get your hands on. I have shot the Walther P99, Glock 22 and 23, FNP 40, S&W40VE, SIGP229 and the HK USP.

I really like the .40 caliber. I currently have my CZ-40B and a Keltec sub2k in .40. My next .40 is going to be a Walther P99. My buddy has one and it fits my hand like a glove.

.40 options

i have the S&W sigma .40 and love it. got to pull a few rnds from the M&P .40 and it was just as nice, but ive said it before and im gonna say it again find a shop that has sidearms for rent at their range ,shoot all the different models youre interested in buy the one youre most comfortable and most accurate with.hope ive helped you a little bit

WOW! So many handguns to choose from! You're right, I must try them myself. It's sad that you can't actually test fire all of them. The XD.40 fits beautifully in my hand. It's too bad we don't have any CZ's around here.

All of the guns that I have shot have been friends pistols or pistols of someone shooting at my club. I cant remember the last time I went shootin and didnt either offer to let someone shoot one of my pistols or rifles or have them reciprocate. Thats the thing I love about shooting, we ALL love to talk guns and show off our guns:D Last weekend, I shot a Romanian PSL and returned the favor by letting the guy shoot my Ishapore .308.

Interesting, .40 is as as hard to find as anything else around here (CenTex), with 9mm much easier. Strange...

I have the XD sub 40, and the Browning .40cal.

In the colder weather, I wear the XD in a high ride holster.

During the Summer I carry the Browning (thinner) in a "Mo Slick" IWB holster by Caldwell leathers.

Being a skinny guy, I can also carry a 1911 without problems, with a T-shirt.

I've had no failures with the Browning .40, the XD, and my Colt.

I shoot a lot....

A good friend of mine is (im)patiently waiting for an online supplier to come through with his SA XD-M .40 Many requests, few items to fulfill them.

Crossed cannons and cross customers!

I just bought a S&W 410 at a local pawn shop for $379. It looked like it's never been carried or fired: cosmetically perfect and no burnishing on the feed ramp, with blue plastic box, orange chamber-plug, and red trigger block still there, and all the original papers... under the top-cover foam! All there!

An hour later I was at the local FOP range, where a buddy, my brother, and I put about eighty rounds of Blazer Brass 180gr FMJ through it without a hitch.

I like this old S&W alloy-frame platform already because I have a police-trade 5904 that I also feel comfortable with: It fits my smaller hands well and I like the feel and mechanics of it.

This is my first .40. Did I do OK?

Thanks,
Les

BP Hunter I have 2 .40 caliber pistols a XD-40 & a Ruger P-944. They are both good but the XD is easier for me to shoot accurately. If you are thinking about using it for concealed carry check out the G-23 it's a really nice size. I don't have one but I shot my neighbors & it was pretty easy to shoot for me. I agree with those who said shoot as many of the guns you're considering as possible. This could save you some money in the long run.

Les, I am at the point now where I have lost count of the rounds put through my 410S and not a single problem that was not user error. I have, on two occasions fat handed the mag release button on draw/fire drills but that is it.

What no votes for my beloved FNP-40?

You've seen 40 ammo? Where? I'm down to 43 rounds!

Our local Ranch and Home store has boxes and boxes of .40 S&W. That's how this thread started. I wanted a .40s&W handgun since I was low on the 9mm. Funny thing, after I started this thread, I found another gunstore which had shelves of 9mm. I went ahead and loaded my cabinet with 600 rounds of 9mm.:)

Thanks Leroy, I appreciate your input.

Local Walmart stores are getting .40 S&W in Winchester USA whitebox 165gr FMJ back in stock pretty reliably around here for $30.92 for a hundred-count box.

FWIW,
Les

I have 2 40SWs, a pre-owned Sig 239 ($475 with 3 mags) as well as a XD 40 sub-compact. Both are great pistols and the ammo is more readily available than 9mm or 45ACP - at least where I live.

Gotta agree with a couple of the others.

M&P all the way.

Comfortable, reliable, accurate, and it won't break the bank.
