I just got an Uberti Cattleman clone of the 1873 Colt SAA in .45LC; I picked up some ammo to get started with:

1) Ultramax 200 gr lead flat point at 630 fps (powderpuff load)...thought it had more snot when I bought it before I researched it

2) Winchester 250 gr lead flat point at 750 fps...closer to 'normal' for this caliber

now I noticed that Winchester Silvertip 225 gr jhp defensive loads are rated at 920 fps...

I know the SAA clones are not 'magnumized' like Ruger Single Actions and Freedom Arms hunting revolvers...are Winchester Silvertips 'too hot' for SAA clones (or anything else around the same SAAMI pressure ratings)?

No.

Only Buffalo Bore and possibly Corbon make anything like a +P or hotter .45 Colt load.

The early black powder Colt .45 load was a 255 grain lead bullet at very close to 1,000 fps out of a 7 1/2" barrel.

All of todays factory loads are rather wimpy in comparison.

The only problem you may have with lighter faster loads is they won't shoot to the sights.

A couple of years ago, the WW factory 255 grain lead was good for 870 fps out of a 7 1/2" barrel. the box I bought the other day was down in the 700s-like the various cowboy action loads from several different companies.

actually buffalo bore has a standard pressure load that is ok in all modern saa's and clones that is 255 @1000 fps

For intown the silvertip would be fine, for woods packing I recomend the Win super x 255gr lrn at 860fps.

found 2 boxes locally of CCI Blazer .45 LC w/ 200 gr Speer Gold Dot 'low velocity' jhp's...Blazer website lists them @ 830 fps from 5.5" barrel; the Uberti Cattleman I have is 4.75" so I shouldn't have alot of reduction in velocity; stickin with the Winchester 250 gr 'cowboy loads' for now until I can get some Remington 225 gr lswc...these are listed @ 960 fps (I'm guessing something between 4" and 7.5" barrel)

(I'm guessing something between 4" and 7.5" barrel)
funny thing you can't always go off barrel length my 4" vaquero will have more velocity with std pressure loads than my 5.5" vaq. its a different story with hotrodded 45 colts.
