We just got a new airport here in sw michigan. Along with new airport came signs on the doors saying no weapons. The airport is not one of the places on our ccw that you can not carry.
So the county can put up a sign and it is law?

123.1102 Regulation of pistols or other firearms.

Sec. 2.

A local unit of government shall not impose special taxation on, enact or enforce any ordinance or regulation pertaining to, or regulate in any other manner the ownership, registration, purchase, sale, transfer, transportation, or possession of pistols or other firearms, ammunition for pistols or other firearms, or components of pistols or other firearms, except as otherwise provided by federal law or a law of this state.

259.80f Possessing, carrying, or attempting to possess certain items in sterile area of airport; prohibitions; violations; penalties; exceptions; other violations; consecutive terms of imprisonment; definitions.

Sec. 80f.

(1) An individual shall not possess, carry, or attempt to possess or carry any of the following in a sterile area of a commercial airport:

(a) Firearm.

(b) Explosive.

(c) Knife with a blade of any length.

(d) Razor, box cutter, or item with a similar blade.

(e) Dangerous weapon.

If the sign simply says no weapons anywhere in the airport, and the airport is operated by a local government, the sign is illegal and in violation of the first statute quoted above.

NavyLT,
Thanks for your work. I probably won't push the issue. I would imagine the sheriffs people in there would not like to be asked about such things. They may not even know the law. There is likely some sort of home land security/patriot/war/federal/ stuff that "gives them the right"

Respectfully, I would suggest you write to whatever authority controls the airport and inform them of the law and ask that the sign be changed to conform to state law and limit firearms in sterile areas only. They hold our feet to the law, it is our responsibility to hold theirs to the law as well. If that doesn't work, the write to your state congress and inform them of the local government thumbing their nose at their legislation.
