New AK problem.

Well, the thing just ran thru 100 rnds of monarch ammo with no problem. Spent the weekend smoothing out the action surfaces to get rid of the grittiness and radiused the hammer to get rid of the clunkiness, degreased and re-lubed everything. The action feels like its on glass now. I knew this was a budget gun when I bought it, but I had no idea the flak I'd get about it. I'm very happy with it now, and the work I did to it over the weekend was a fun learning experience. And the tula ammo that didn't work last week STILL won't fire, lol.

Never assume the problem is with the gun until you tried ammo and/or magazines from a couple of different sources.

Its always possible to get a bad lot of ammo or magazines.

I've never had an IO AK ... But the AK isn't exactly a precision piece of machinery. For goodness sake, the re-make damaged receivers from shovels in caves in Pakistan ...

All ammo company's that produce cheap ammo have duds. Remington makes some very high quality 22 ammo ... they also make Thunderbolts; that before Sandy Hook, you could buy for $10 a brick ... and less at Walmart!

I don't want to sound like a snob but I don't understand people that expect perfect preformance when they buy a cheap gun and the cheapest ammo they can find.

Well I sure aint no snob, just a texas beaner, and I have all kinds of guns, cheap to fine and everything in between. I expect duds from even good 22's, but NEVER had a dud from ANY kind of centerfire round. Live and learn

It think everyone should get some real experience with cheap ammo, far better to have your first Failure To Fire or Failure To Feed at the range during practice than sometime when it might really matter. "Quality" ammo reduces the possibility, but it doesn't make it impossible.

This definitely makes sense, could be why the hammer was striking on top only. My trusty dremel took care of it though, lol.
Good job! The reason I recommend that first is that I don't know what peoples' capabilities are.

Probably what your gunsmith would have done. ;)

Dont know anything about AKs

This sums up pretty much everyone who has ever bought an IO rifle.

Jogar, do you know the difference between an AK and an AR? You must be firing your AR, because they never work right.

Everyone on the internet (and Outdoor Channel TV shows) knows that AKs will work every time, they never ever fail.

Again - these folk have never encountered IO products. They truly are bottom-of-the-barrel.

My very first AR was an olympic arms plinker. Exactly what everyone calls bottom of the barrel. I learned a lot with that rifle and now have many ARs, all of which i can service myself. That oly arms AR is the one that gets the most abuse and the most rounds thru it. It must not know it is a POS because it refuses to stop running.

I have a tendency to buy on impulse and THEN read all about what I just bought. Most times it ends the same way this purchase did.... Finding out i bought a POS. But every POS i have bought, be it a gun or a car or a tool or whatever, has forced me to educate myself on repairing or refining that POS. In the end it just means i dont have to rely in anyone to make do. As i mentioned earlier, i have lots of VERY nice things and lots of crappy things... And i looove ALL my toys... Funny thing is, it's ALWAYS the POS toys i use the most.

Thanks to all the great people here that actually tried to offer some helpful info!

The thing is I actually tried. :D

Seriously, go to akfiles.com and mention IO there. There is a high noise-to-signal ratio there, but those guys know their AKs. They will be much less diplomatic than me on the topic of IO.
