so today I took out my new AR to be shot for the first time. Keep in mind this is only the second time I'd ever SHOT an AR. I can barely even tell you where the forward assist is. It's a Doublestar brand with Magpul stock and handguard assembled by a guy I did tradework for. Anyway,

I got through the first mag just fine. On the last round it jammed. I had to holt the bolt open while a friend cleared it. I dropped the hammer. I want to drop the bolt with the button, so I put in an empty mag and engaged the last round lock open. I inserted a fresh mag, dropped the bolt and from that point on, it would do single shot only. No ejection, at all. Single shot, manual clear, single shot.

What is the deal you think? Obviously I need to brush up better on the AR as a whole. any tips and advice about getting more comfortable? thanks.

Doublestar is a really good product - in fact it's as good as any of them.

I have one and I have a Sabre Defence national match. I enjoy the DS just as much as my $2200 SD rifle.

I'd call DS tomorrow morning - they'll take care of you.

my guess is you're not getting any gas in the system. maybe not terribly surprising if it was assembled by "a guy" from doublestar parts...

make sure your gas block is on right. maybe after a few rounds, it moved and the hole isn't lined up
is the gas tube still in?

honestly, i barely even know where the gas block is at thiis poijnt. im guessing its under the handguard. LOL!

im working on general disassembly right now. ive gotten as far as taken the upper off of the lower.

at any rate, its probably not a high value issue right? it seems to be internal parts by and large are cheap as heck, and if i did have a bad extractor or something...i could UPGRADE original the part for very cheap. am i correct?

The number one weak link in the AR is the extractor. If it extracts, but fails to eject, dropping the empty in the receiver, you're extractor gave out.

I would replace the extractor and extrator spring.

Look for a manual that explains the operation of the AR 15 and where the controls are and what they do. Then field strip a few times so that you understand the major assemblies of the rifle.
Like this one-www.ar15.com/content/manuals/TM9-1005-319-23.pdf
For trouble shooting your problem first-
Lube up the bolt carrier assembly.
Check the gas rings on the bolt and make sure the gaps are staggered.
Then check the gas block and gas tube.

theyre not dropping through the mag well...theyre just sitting there. ill shoot. and nothing. ill remove the mag, chrage the handle and empty flies out...

Could be a broken or loose gas key. Once you've got the upper and lower apart, pull back the charging handle and slide the bolt and bolt carrier out the rear of the upper. There's a little "L" or handle shaped thing on the front of the bolt carrier. It's held on by two screws. Is it loose or broken?

username, you sure make me feel better. There i thought i was the only one who didnt know anything about something i own! I dont know what i'll do when it comes time to clean it other than the barrel. Oh well, when it comes time i'll just ask on here.

you definitely have a issue with the gas system! gas block misalignment, gas key is loose, but i'm thinking is the guy who installed you gas tube forgot the roll pin that explans why it shot fine for 15 rounds or so now it is a single shot

You aren't getting any gas at all. So you have a complete blockage of the gas system somewhere. The only times I've seen something like this where it went from running fine to complete nothing it was:

1. Loose spent primer wedged in the gas key
2. Gas block shifted
3. Gas tube came loose

So, I would look at those three spots, starting with your gas key.

first go to YouTube and punch in AR-15 UPPER build the videos will give you an idea on what is what and how to assemble/disassemble

open the receivers and look in the upper receiver from the bottom. the gas tube should be sticking out an inch and a half or so. put your finger on it and see if you can get it to spin or move in or out. (flexing it a tiny bit is normal, but spinning or forward/backward movement definitely means you've shut off the gas)

you've got to have some sort of blockage,is you front sight a stock A2 sight or is a flipup or plain gasblock? i'm just wondering has the gas block moved

uyou tell me...im sorry im not giving you guys more to go on. ive ALWAYS been a shotgun guym and still am. i do know these rifles aRe sweet and its probably a simple fix. i guess this is an M4? thats how basic my black rifle knowledge is.

there is some give between the handguard and barrel if i hold the handguard with one hand and move the front sight left to right. the sight itself doesnt move. i hear a slight clank/rattle sound as well when i do this.
