I picked up a DPMS Panther bull 20 a couple of weeks ago.

I managed to put a major scratch in the barrel.

I had the gun in 2 pieces and broke the bolt release button by pulling the trigger.

On my first outing, I shot a 1in group at 50yards with my YHM pop-up sights. I then did some rapid fire, and got fist size group at 50 yards.

The trigger sticks some and doesn't return all the way forward preventing another shot. Are the stock triggers worth a trip to gunsmith for a trigger job, or should I invest in an aftermarket trigger. I love my Timney on my bolt gun, is their AR trigger just as good? Chip McCormick, JARD, JP Enterprises, Jewell are other brands I have heard about. This will be a hunting and plinking gun, I plan on running a scope.

This is my first AR, and my first .223. I am reloading junkie, I bought the dies and components before getting the rifle.

You broke the bolt release by pulling the trigger?

The stock triggers are fine for what the rifle was designed for. If you're looking for a really great trigger then I'd recommend an after market trigger.

Well the stock trigger may be just fine for what they were intended, however very few of us are buying AR's to take to battle. That being said, the stock triggers are horrible for civilians intended purposes, and it sounds like you could benefit from a good aftermarket trigger. Any of the quality triggers you mentioned should serve you well.

breaking the bolt catch is not uncommon when the upper is off. always let the trigger down easy there. put your hand in front of it or buy one of the little devices for it so that the trigger doesn't strike the bolt catch.

put lots of scratches on it. i'd far rather look at a well-worn, scratched up gun than one with dust on it from years in the closet.

You can buy the JP trigger springs for a cheap lighter trigger, however I recommend using the yellow spring on the trigger and the copper colored spring on the hammer; using both yellow springs will cause a few failure to fire's. I have heard that the Jard trigger is pretty good from a 3-gun shooter. The JP adjustable trigger, I think, is one of the best triggers available. It can be set to your likings, though I don't know exactly what it is capable of; a friend has one but I didn't set it. It rings in at $120 or so, saving you $80 from the timney/jewel/chip triggers.

Also, I have heard that if you get a "drop in" trigger like the chip mccormick super match triggers, you can have problems if the holes on the trigger don't match the holes on the lower.

Also, you must have a very heavy hammer spring if you broke the bolt catch on the first dry fire. I've dry fired mine a few times (15-20) without it breaking.

yea, I think it was cheapy metal, but a common newby mistake.

I found replacement on Brownells' for 8.95 from DPMS. There are fancy ones so you can drop the bolt from your trigger hand. I saw a nice one for $13, I think it was Wilson Combat. The fancy longs ones are like 30$ and 60$.

I am hoping to get this sucker up to a 300-500yard 'yote gun.

I picked up a bunch of Sierra bullets (50gr SP,55gr BlitzKing,60gr SP, 63gr, 69gr Match) for 20% off at the range. They had a flood. Going to see what works for this gun.

The PMag's have been great. But no room for playing too much with OAL. The 69gr will be my single-shot loads. I think 2.25in OAL is the norm.

I will put my Burris 4.5-14x Fulfield II on it to see what it can really do.

These things are more addictive than bolt on parts for late model Mustangs.

yup.. And I've only had mine a couple months at most. I have big plans to totally re-do it. I wish my funds added up like my ideas.

Probably, but the rifle doesn't look like a jacked- with piece of s*** after you're done. I hate it when people jack with Mustangs...:fire:

Anddddd...
