Last week I stumbled upon a Boyds Varmint Thumbhole in their Rapid Fire section that would fit my model 10 just perfectly. Listed at $102.00 I thought I would take a chance and give it a go around. Well it arrived today so I dropped it on to see how it feels.

I was hesitant in buying a Thumbhole as I have tried a couple and they just don't feel comfortable. Which I also why I have on order a Richards Microfit Field Trekker for the model 11 build. Now I honestly have to say that yes to me it doesn't feel like a good fit to my hand.

So for now my plan is to try shooting it as-is to determine real bench comfort. If it feels ok or like I could adapt to it I will then take it back apart for bedding.

Late already tonight and have Dr. in the morning so I will try to post some pictures tomorrow.

With thumbholes there's no happy medium, either they fit your or they don't and are horrible. I never really liked the looks, some of the European rifles don't look to bad tho. I inletted a jap 99 into a small ring mauser boyds thumbhole one day, that thing is going to look super ugly one of these days when I finish it lol.

I've also thought about trying a TH on that mauser m18 the at-one stock looks ok but don't think I'd like the square grip.

The older and possibly the full size Boyds thumbholes fit me fine and feel ok, but the featherweight I got in for a buddy of mine wasnt comfortable for my larger hands.
The @1 thumbhole on my 457 is likewise less than fantastic, and Im probably going to replace it with a ProVarmint.

Troy if you wanna see how the @1 feels for you I can send it over.

Thanks for the offer but no worries. I want to do more long shot strings with the m18 and see how that barrel acts if I wan't to do a semi long range deer rifle. So far the barrel settled in and does not seem to wonder.

I shot that thing pretty bloody hot, like burn hand hot, more once. As far as i remember there wasnt much if any stringing.

I have only used one Boyd's thumbhole stock. It has been sitting in a cabinet where I put discarded stocks for several years now. It was made for someone with tiny hands and just didn't "feel" right at all to me. I made a thumbhole stock from scratch for the rifle to suit me. I like thumbhole stocks but have never held a ready made, fits everyone thumbhole stock that felt like I wanted except for the one I put on my G2 Contender.

I have their Spike Camp thumbhole stock, it's not bad though if they offered a non-thumbhole version I'd probably go that route. I'm kind of neutral on thumbholes, if I got a good deal on one I'd probably pick it up but I also wouldn't specifically go looking for one.

I kept watching the Rapid Fire section hoping a Pro Varmint would show up. then this one did and the price was so that I couldn't resist. I'll still watch for a Pro V. model.

Quite true. Looking at the pistol grip in the pic I was only visualizing trimming its butt. ;)
That design actually has quite a bit meat you can remove..... Again if it's anything like the old one I had.
I do wonder though because 93R17 BTVSS which used a Boyd stock had kind of a short grip also..... Again take that with a grain of salt I have fairly large hands. Double stack autoloaders sometimes feel small, and single stack 1911s arnt comfortable without those big bulky combat grips everybody else hates.

Yes I do have a Richards Field Trekker stock coming for my Model 11 build. It's not supposed to be here until 10/16 and once I have it and can evaluate it I may just order another for the Model 10 and am eyeing a Wolverine model. For now I am impatiently waiting. waiting, waiting!

I did get an opportunity to shoot it today and the verdict is still out.First of all a number of times I kept trying to wrap my thumb over the top instead of thru the hole. Still the grip feels thin and a sharp edge on the backside of the thumb hole. It also feels like a stretch to reach the trigger.
I will add that I was trying to shoot this while I was working and every time I would get a start a new customer would arrive so I would have to stop. So I am going to have to try this again while I am not working.

I bloodied my nose wraping my thumb over the bridge on my 7.5lb 300 build.....One of the reasons I quit using thumbholes was simply because MOST of my other gun the thumb went over, not thru lol.
The do also increase the reach to the trigger....usually anyway. I personally like that about them as it usually feels like my hands a little close on most factory stocks.

I learned not to have the thumb over the wrist, i Pierced a primer on a 93 mauser one time. It's not fun having that long cocking piece smash your thumb lol.
