I always figured a hammer thong was intended for a holster worn while on horseback. Getting tossed from your trusted equine (lol) presents a golden opportunity for your pistol to get tossed as well. A hammer thong might help keep the revolver in the possession of the rider after a wreck. (smile)

Elmer Keith wrote of that very thing happening. Boot stuck in the stirrup. Got the six gun out and ended the running.

I always looked at it as added insurance. Something to use only when you think you need a little added security. To be left off most the time.

NIce work.
Why the thumbs down???

Bill Jordan explained the strap on the holster named after him. To be snapped only when you anticipated running or jumping etc.

For me, that reads "never". :p

Yep, me too!

If I am in rougher situations than the streets of Memphis, then I do select a bit of retention. I made this ole holster many, many years ago. And I do prefer the snap stap over the hammer thong. Also want the strap long enough that I can tuck it behind my belt if need be.

Something that I have always really liked and never tried to replicate, is the strap on an FA holster. I don't know who made them but it's brilliant. The root of the strap is a rivet that allows the strap to rotate. So that when it's not being used, you can snap it and rotate it down out of the way. Of course, the way they did it requires a lined holster and I don't do those.

Well, shucky darn. I thought it was an up. I'm having some trouble with with itchy, burning, watery eyes and was using a new eyedrop recommended to me by my eye doctor yesterday. About all the eyedrops did was make my vision worse. Looking thru smoke would be a fairly good description and I guess I just couldn't see where the thumb was pointing. Here is a correction.:thumbup:
