Found someone selling a 50 caliber New England Huntsman, claims exc. cond., with breech plug wrench and scope. Guy wants $250. Is this gun worth a flip? Is it a good price? I know nothing about black powder, just thinking about getting into it.

I have one works fine. But to get it to that point you have buy a aftermarket Breech plug and you should buy a better ramrod.I think it would be around $75 for the plug and rod but I’ve had mine a while.Seen it posted that the barrels are Green Mountain but don’t know if that’s fact or not.I have Knights,CVA,Ruger and TC the H&R shoots and works just as good. But $250 plus the aftermarket parts is high I’d try to get him down to $200 depending on the scope.

I had an H & R Huntsman back in the 70's as I recall. It was .58 caliber. I had lots of misfires. Tried different nipples, caps, but persisted. There was a recall due to the breach plug could blow out into shooter if one had a hangfire & opened the action too quick. The bp was barely a friction fit with a rubber o ring.

They do look pretty cool, if nothing else. Apparantly not the best design though from reading this thread!

I have one in .50 cal. It's a good shooter. Short and handy. That price seems a bit high. I would recommend using a range rod and save the factory ramrod for field use.
