I just bought a new FN .40 HI-POWER yesturday. This is going to be my primary CCW. I know this will bring up questions of why this and not that. I had a knock off BHP before and it was the best shooting pistol I ever had, but hated the 9mm. I truly love the .45 1911 (from 22 yrs as Infantryman), but the last one I had. I must of put an extra $200 to fix it up to shot Okay. I wanted something that I knew I would love with extra power out of the box. Round placement is a given and not an issue!!
Questions:
1. Why is the upper receiver release so stiff?
2. How can I tell when the pistol was made? I was told 2003, but can't find it on the box or pistol.
3. It is a standard with blank set sights with grooves to paint it white. How is this best done?
4. Any tips?

Thanks!!! Duckster

Thanks for the link

Marshal,
Thanks for the link and the welcome! Very helpful. I'm looking forward to the many years together.

Does anybody have answears to the other questions to my original post?

You're welcome.

The slide release has pressure put on it from the slide. Pull the slide back a little bit then push the release, it should be very easy. I hope that was your question?

As for the sights, I'm not sure I understand? Are they adjustable or fixed? The fixed sights should have white dots on them. The adjustable sights are made to be black. If you want to paint the front of the front sight white, you can do it a number of ways. Model airplane paint is easy to get, white fingernail polish will work too.You might want to consider shooting it first and getting a good feel for where to hold the front sight. Once you find it, just put a dab of paint on that area, a spot/dot if you will, instead of painting the whole length of the front blade. Those are pretty long blades.

Marshal,
Thanks for the tip on the release. I discovered by playing with it, that the release works much easier with a round in the magazine and/ro there is no magazine in the pistol.
The sights are fixed sites. This is the standard pistol addition. The sights look like they should have paint marks in the slots for the enamel, but aren't there. So the sights are black with the paint grooves in them. The dealer didn't understand it either, but I didn't buy it for the sites.
Do you have this pistol ,and if so how do you like it so far?

Thanks again, Duckster

Hey Duckster, I have one of the new FN Hi Powers in 40 S&W also. Mine too came with the fixed sights that have the recessed "dots" but where not painted. I assumed that they came that way to give the new owner the option of painting them to suit your own purpose.

Did you get the traditional single action or the factory SFS system? poppy

Poppy,
I got the single action. For some insane reason I prefer them to double action in pistols. It is the standard model with the shinny black finsh and walnut grips. I don't plan on changing a thing. The reason I paid the extra bucks was to get a very nice pistol staight out of the box.
I appreciate your reply and if you have any tips, I would enjoy hearing them. Thanks!

FWIW, the SFS system does not change the firing action. It is still a SA in every way, just has a different safety system.

Sorry, I really don't have any tips for you; I am new to the Hi Power world myself. You might try over here: http://www.handgunsandammo.proboards36.com poppy
