My initial impression of this new (to me) Glock G29.4 is that it's a Glock, and pretty much like all the others.

So I had this holster that needed a gun, and now it has one.

Actually I'd been considering a G29 for a while, I just wasn't sure I wanted such a short barrel. But I found a lightly used with three mags and decided I should buy it. It still had the copper colored slide rail grease on it, so I doubt it has been cleaned, but the barrel didn't look as dirty as mine usually do after 50 rounds. I took it home, cleaned it, reversed the mag release and shaved the hard corner off it. Then set off for the hills, to break it in.

After 10 rounds to check it shot okay and didn't explode or anything, I wanted to do some chronograph and POA/POI tests. I have three loads in 10mm. A range load using an RMR 180gr FMJ-FN bullet and 7.2-7.5gr of Unique (I try to keep it close to 7.4gr). A woods load with the same bullet but a full charge (according to Alliant) of BE-86. And a defensive load using BE-86 and a 180gr XTP.

I set up a target at around 25-30 yards, in a brisk wind, and with temps around 35 degrees. The chrono was 12' away, and I was kneeling behind a rickety old cable wheel which is the closest thing that gulch has to a table. Accuracy results were therefore not great, but POI was relatively consistent, with the fastest load hitting a couple inches lower than the slowest. 10 shots of each.

High - Low - Average - ES - SD

180gr FMJ/Unique
1090 - 1057 - 1071 - 33 - 9

180gr FMJ/BE-86
1170 - 1152 - 1162 - 18 -6

180gr XTP/BE-86
1153 - 1142 - 1145 - 11 - 3

BE-86 always seems to produce tight numbers for me. Those numbers were about what I was expecting, just lower than I was hoping. The Unique load is really more like a hot .40S&W than a 10mm, but it's still fairly powerful at around 458ft.lbs so I don't feel like I'm cheating too much when I shoot it.

Anyhow, I used the remaining 80 rounds of that Unique load to run Mozambique drills at 10 yards. That gave me a chance to wring out the pistol a little, and catch up on some much needed live fire and holster work. I didn't have a shot timer with me, but will consider loading up some of the BE-86 load for the next range session to see what I do with "full power" ammo.

A left handed guy shooting down and right??? I don't believe it! :D At least they all found the cardboard.

It's not a bad little pistol. I certainly didn't mind not having my pinky on the grip, but then again I've put some good time in with a G33 in the past couple years, so I'm somewhat used to the feeling.

It's noticeably smaller than the G20, but comes out of the holster pretty much the same. Muzzle velocity loss is around 55fps from the stock G20 4.6" barrel, and more like 95fps from the 5.0" KKM. Which makes some sense as to why recoil seems comparable. I'll have a better idea how it measures up when I get the opportunity to run it with a shot timer. But for now, it seems I may have a new summer carry pistol.

I'm so glad I live in FL.
The 180 XTP would be a good SD load for where its 35 degrees and people are wearing heavy clothing.

35 degrees is actually pleasant compared to some of what winter gave us this year. But yes, the 180gr does penetrate farther than say a 155gr.

At the velocities I'm attaining in this gun, expansion of that 180gr is likely to be only around 0.62", whereas if driven in the upper 1200s can reach closer to 0.75" or more. Though honestly, between the shorter barrel and the narrower velocity window of the 155gr XTP, I suspect the 155 might not expand well at all from the G29. The 180gr .400" XTP does seem to be a versatile bullet. Though not quite versatile enough to perform well at conventional .40S&W velocities it would appear.

Big 10mm fan here .. I really liked my 29 .. still like my 20 .. traded my 29 for a Marlin 336 Texan

I ended up with a XDM E Compact .. good pistol ..
actually carrys good .. great trigger .. but having to buy extra mags sorta sucked

My past experience with magazine grip sleeves has not been terribly positive. Same with Pearce pinky extensions. I ended up running my G33 with a flush fit mag in place, and a G23/32 mag (or a Glock +1 mag) as a backup. I've found that to work best for me, particularly because whilst pinky pinch isn't a big deal for a few rounds, 50 rounds worth of emergency reload drills have left me sore enough that my shooting suffered towards the end of the session.

However, I'm sure they work great for some people, and think everyone who has a sub compact should at least try them.

I really like the Pearce extensions on my 29. But, I'm right-handed and run my mag release on the right due to short fingers. The unexpected benefit is that this forces me to tip the bottom of the grip away from my dominant hand when reloading. No more pinky bites! My reloads are faster this way too.

For me it's not just from seating fresh magazines, unfortunately. It's also my skin getting between the extension (or sleeve) and the mag well, then getting pinched under recoil. I don't really know what to say about it, other than I prefer to go without.

I prefer going without magazine extensions also. I have gotten used to a two finger grip and wrapping my pinky finger under the magazine. My XXL hands normally don't fit 3 fingers on the grip with the extensions.

Gosh your write up was my exact experience with my 29. From the “Yep it’s a Glock”, to the “I don’t mind tucking my pinky”, all the way to the “180gr. is the choice for carry”. I ended up trading it to my cousin after he fell in love with it but I regret that.

I’ve tried to talk myself into a Springfield or the new s&w’s but I keep getting brought back to the 29. For a compact 10mm it’s hard to beat.

I had a Gen 3 29 for a while, but being a lefty I kept hitting the slide lock with my trigger finger and locking the slide back with full power loads. As much as I love everything else about it, I regrettably sold it.

I then bought a Glock 30 SF and it has been 100% for me. I am guessing that the difference in the way the guns recoil make the difference. While not a powerful as my 29, the 30SF is a great gun!

I am glad to see a fellow Lefty rocking the 29! Maybe I need to give it another try.

I had a Glock 30 SF that pinched my pinky finger every time I did a mag change with it. Sold it. I still have a Glock 21 SF mainly because I bought 10 13rd PD trade in mags back in the day for cheap. It's too chunky for my hands and I don't shoot it well. My groups are about like yours.

G29 is sweet. I've had a g30sf since November 2012, it's pretty much always close at hand and gets carried a lot. Every time I get a hankerin' to pick up a g29 I carry my g20 for a few weeks and realize my g30 is almost as good. Lol.
These make good carry guns but mind the holster, I used a galco king tuck for several years and a few others but when I got a proper iwb holster for my g30 I knew I had been doing it wrong.
This one was made by black rhino concealment

I recommend one like this because everything else I tried was too flexible and things moved around unless my belt was super tight.
