I have access to a lot of different service pistols in virtually all common calibers but MY personal favourite full size hi-cap 9 mm pistol is definitely the G17. The first thing I do when a new pistol design or model variation appears is to compare its features to the Glock. In my opinion, among the many modern duty sidearms there's still none better than the Glock, especially the G17.
When training novice shooters at the range I have found that a lot of them do quite well with the Glock. That's probably also the reason why the Glock is so popular with the police, both in the U.S. and abroad. A Recruit that has never touched a handgun can do quite well with the Glock right from the beginning. The Glock also has a rather simple, K.I.S.S. ("Keep It Simple, Stupid) manual of operation. Furthermore, because of its ergonomics, ease of controllability, hi-capacity and durability the G17 is a superior sidearm to have in the moment of truth.
I've started shooting with 1911 Custom pistols and I was quite pampered by their light, crisp single-action trigger. I agree, the G17 is somewhat more difficult to master than a 1911, but definitely easier than the various "traditional" DA autos. It just takes a little range time and patience.
You've made a great choice. Stick to your Glock 17. I do.
All the best!
