I am one of those guys who goes into Wal-mart at least once a week for some thing or the other, but lately I have been working out of town and just haven't had the time. Imagine my surprise when I swung by the gun counter and saw a Sig 522, DPMS Sportical and, a Sig AR in the display case. I didn't even know Sig made an AR. This one was decked out in OD green Mag-pul furniture and had nice flip-up iron sights for $978.00. The Sporticals had nothing on them but were value priced at $558.00. I might have to get one. The 522 looked cool but I think I will get the S&W AR 22 when I can afford it.

I just bought me a Colt 6920 at my local Wal-Mart and a bulk can of Federal xm855 penetrator 5.56 ammo. The ammo is selling as fast as they can get it on the shelf. I couldn't believe that there was a Colt setting in the gun case my local store.

If Walmart could turn a buck selling used toilet paper there would be an isle dedicated to it IMHO.:banghead: They are the same with firearms as any other product. I predict that a majority of them will end up with handguns in the near future if the political climate keeps moving in the direction it is now. I still do not trust the quality of their offerings as there has to be more to it than bulk buying power with firearms price points so low.
I am glad however that they do carry the expanded line in store now.

walmarts--not quite mattie matels.There won't be any difference between a Colt AR sold at Wal-Mart and a Colt AR sold at _______ (insert your local gun shop here) other than about a 25% price differential. Manufacturer's don't lower the quality to sell at Walmart. Walmart just reaches so many consumers that Walmart can force manufacturers to sell their normal product to them at very low prices, which Walmart in turn can sell at very low prices, merely b/c they sell so many goods each day. Have you ever stood near the checkout and just listened to the "beeps" of the scanners? It's like musical money!!
Forgive me, but Walmart is what capitalism is all about - movement of capital to those who can best fill unmet needs/wants. If Walmart sells me an AR cheaper than I can get it at the local gun shop, that means more money going towards other guns and ammo. That being said, there are a lot of reasons why I may still go to a gun shop to buy what I need. I like supporting local business, and Walmart's customer service is generally terrible. Especially about firearms and ammo. Not to mention selection. Most Walmart's will have 10-20 long guns, whereas any decent gun shop will have a couple times that amount.

As a service contractor I can tell you that WalMart does more than just sell volume to get lower prices. Due to their regulation and slow payment terms we no longer do any work for them. As for lower quality, several years ago Levi's went public with a demand from WalMart to make them lower quality versions of their jeans so WalMart could undercut the competition. With my experiences concerning WalMart practices and the poor service offered in our loacl stores I don't do business with them. You may, but someone else is paying a price for your savings.

It's the same with all "Big Box" stores. I'm sure the guns are fine, BUT, I learned from a vendor at a "Home Improvement" store that even though the brand names are genuine, the products aren't the companies best effort.
This is why the prices are so good. I have also found that when you try and find the model number for some items, they are "one off" (at least with power tools) so I figure that the manufacturers are producing a line for the "Big Box" account and the quality may not be what you would expect if you went and bought direct from the manufacturer. My 2 Cents.Walmart's guns are no cheaper and often higher than my local gun store.

Oftentimes the manufacturers will "scale down" models specifically for stores like Walmart, Dick's, etc. For example, I bought a Savage 10 at a Walmart. Was it the normal Savage 10? No... It had the Accu-Trigger, but not the Accu-stock and it had a lighter barrel. It was still a great buy at at top quality, it just lacked one or two upgrades that the LGSs would have.

Walmart will sell what people will buy. They are a company and are in it for the money.
If people want guns, they will sell guns.

I purchase many things from Wal Mart, but I will NEVER purchase a firearm from them, I support my local FFL guys and buy from them.

RC, that sucks. Our local WM does not sell guns, and Cabelas is less than 1 mile away. I stop there for Ammo, from time to time but Cabelas beats those prices too.
As far as LGS, most of them that I have gone to are run by a buch of A-Holes who are only interested in telling me how little I know about guns so I prefer to go to the larger store where they just want my money and are cheaper.
I used to use a private FFL but he is out of business.

Well IMHO it would be a lot easier to go to my LGS if he wasn't so hard to work with. Just because I'm 22 and he's ancient, doesn't mean that I don't know a thing or two.
If there were another FFL (Bass Pro Shops not included) in the area, I wouldn't spend a dime on my brick-and-mortar. A while back I was looking for an AK-74 and found an okay Bulgy for $479 in a catalogue. Asked him how much would I pay to get it there? Turns around and tells me $650.
I might as well go and get licensed as an FFL myself...

I couldn't believe but mine is also selling the Colt 6920's and Sigs. Never thought I would see the day. It's certainly becoming more popular but they have raised the prices on ammo again and I only expect that to continue as we get close to election time.

FROGO207, WalMart used to have handguns in stock, then Mr Sam died and is kids turned the company into China Mart, phased handguns to catalog order only, then out the door. And to the ammo-is-running-out mongers, our Wally World is fully stocked, guns and ammo. I just prefer to get components and make my own.

Blame manufacturers willing to drive themselves out of business because they can't say no to Walmart. Wally-world often tries to bully manufactures into selling product to Walmart at little to no profit, and when a manufacture isn't willing to put their company out of business for such a ridiculous demand, Walmart finds a manufacture who will. After that manufacture drives themselves out of business, Walmart finds it's next victim/sucker.
The best example is Vlasic pickles, Walmart was selling a 12lbs jar of pickles for 2.97, a 0.03 profit for Vlasic, sure that might be about 370,000 a year depending on volume of sales, but who can run their business at a 1% profit? Walmart did its homework, Vlasic did not and Vlasic paid the price, dumb asses.
