Help--
I just was given an old k98k Mauser--and I need help in figuring out how to get the cleaning rod to screw into place--It seems as if the rod end where it screws into the stock just wont screw in --Am I not seeing something here??

You may not have it pushed in far enough. It could be hanging on a gauge inside the stock or something. Give it a couple light taps with a small hammer and see if it goes in further. If not, I've used a set of vise-grips around the end and had to use them to put some downward force on the rod while turning it.

Exactly, the M/98 cleaning rod required two other guys and their rods to make one long enough. Either your enternal stock nut is missing, it is full of junk, your rod is not the correct rod, or you are not holding your tongue right.

Also, if it's a reproduction rod you may be dealing with a tight fit.

Concur. Tried a repro and it wouldn't fit. Broke down and shelled out the money for an original and it fit perfectly.

...and don't ask me how much I paid for an original cleaning rod. It was too darn much for a piece of eye candy. :barf:

Did it unscrew to come out or would it just pull out? If it was missing the nut, you probably would have noticed a loose or wobbly rod when it was in the gun. Check out the threads on the end of the rod. Make sure they're not marred up. Take some penetrating oil and go over them a few licks with a wire brush.

Thanks to all-- for the info and advice-- It still dosen't appear to be seating into the nut--I suspect it is a repro rod--It measurs out to be a 4.0 by 7.0mmthread and from what I can research the thread should be 4.5 by 7.7mm--Does this sound correct??
