Can anyone tell me if something goes on the threaded end of the cleaning rod so that the rod goes the full lenght of the barrel to enable cleaning. The rods I have are marked with the same numbers as the bolts and actions but they appear to me to be about 3" short. The Mausers are a 1935 Banner and a 1909 Argentine. I know the threaded end of the rod screws into under barrel section for transporting and storage. :banghead:

Typically* you screwed two rods (yours and your battle buddies) together to make 1 full length cleaning rod. The system wasn't designed for a lone rifleman.

*K98K era. Don't know about earlier models.

Some of the older almost full length rods like those used in the Swedish m/96 and m/38 Mausers, used a short section of rod-to-jag adapter that came inside the cleaning kit. ( A two section deal) It really makes me wonder why they did not store them inside the buttstock..??

As stated above, the very short rod sections for most M-98 type Mauser rifles required two or three soldiers to sit around and clean rifles together.

I checked a Swedish training/technical manual: "Instructions for the Infantry Soldier" from 1943.
About the Mauser M/96, it teaches that if soldiers were missing the full length rods, and the special longer jags, they should team up in pairs using the short cleaning rod and the standard brush. One soldier holding the rifle and the other working the cleaning rod from back to front, and then finish the cleaning by working a third of the barrel from front to back.
